This is why I cant be left alone.

Yeah... I knew my ttops leaked a little. But this past week it poured up here, and well it flooded out my car. So naturally I was just gunna dry it out and clean it real good. Well today I had nothing to do so I took out everything but from the drivers seats forward. And holy ****, what ever the crap they put under the carpets in these things is ****. Kinda like the door panels... but anyways. It got time to put em back in and well I had a rattle can and a scuffy. I cleaned then scuffied some of the plastics and just masked off the carpet. I eventually will be completely changing my interior to black, Ill buy black plastics but I thought I may as well give this a whirl. just painted the lower part of the plastics in the "trunk" area. Lemme kno what you guys think. Im kind of thinking bout rattle canning all the plastics black just to change it up till I can afford a new interior. Just worried bout how well itll stick. Other than that, has anyone used a different carpet in the plastics? this long **** is annoying.

Re: This is why I cant be left alone.

if you strip off the carpet, remove the glue and you can paint to your heat's delight or glue black carpeting back on. The small roll of carpeting sold at pep boys and such should fit your need for this.

Rattle can paint doesn't usually stick too well.

There is paint just for vinyl, but even that takes a bit of surface prep before applying

I tried going the same route as you did once upon a time by spraying all my factory beechwood panels black. Didn't take long at all for the paint to start scratching off. In hindsight, it probably would have adhered much better had I done the proper prep work to remove 23 years worth of silicone from armorall and turtlewax, but still not the best approach.

Then I decided for round 2 a couple months ago. I went to the junkyard and pulled some fresh black interior out of a trans am, and here is the secret you are looking for. I used walmart carpet and 3M trim adhesive to dress up all the panels. If memory serves me correctly, they sell the carpet for around $8 a roll and you cut and fit it however you want. Very time consuming if you want it finely detailed but the end result pays off:

Yes the carpet is thinner than the stock carpet. Personally I think stock carpet is a bit too thick and has a borderline **** appearance.

For deadener, I actually used nothing and removed the jute padding from the stock carpet. This is purely a personal preference. I did it for the weight savings. I like a balance of beauty and performance. I did hit the floors with some rubberized undercoating to deter any interior rust while the interior was out, but I did not lay it on thick in search of a dampening effect. This is purely based on what YOU want from your car, and I will not knock you either way you choose. I will say with any decently powered stereo, sound deadening becomes a non issue.

It was the more expensive professional grade stuff by either 3m or rustoleum. Do not get the cheap crap. It has the consistency of spraypaint and flakes off rather easily.

Re: This is why I cant be left alone.

The carpet at walmart is the same as I mentioned.

The prepwork is actually an etching primer specially made for plastic.

It is not offered in an aeresol though.

I do not remember the name.

If you find original black plastics, that is the best way to go.

Oh, I agree the shorter pile carpet looks a lot cleaner than the original.

Re: This is why I cant be left alone.

You can get paint to stick on the interior plastic if you wash them good, use wax and grease remover, wash them again, scuff with red scotchbrite, wash them again then use adhesion promoter and vinyl paint. I am pleased with how mine turned out using that process.
