Grant Steering Wheel/Turn Signal Woes

So my turn signal was feeling like it was going to stop cancelling soon and my horn no longer worked (the cancel cam plastic broke, what a surprise!) so I decided to replace the turn signal cam, the turn signal cancel cam, the cancelling springs, and clean everything while I was in there. Everything went fine, I installed it by just tightening everything until I was satisfied.

Then I thought I may have overshot an actual torquing figure. I took the car for a drive around the block and the steering wheel stuck in position wherever I left it. Instead of the steering wheel righting itself, it just stayed in that position (keeping the car turning whatever direction) until I manually pulled it back to where it was supposed to go.

Another problem I noticed, is that the steering wheel is off by 15 to 30 degrees(like the car pulls to the right and I have to constantly correct it by having the steering wheel turned 15 to 30 degrees to the left.) Needless to say, I messed up and I knew it. I looked up the torque ratings from GT Grant's website, and yup, there were values I way overshot...

Yet another problem I ran into is that now the turn signal cancel cam does not cancel. I replaced all the parts with "HELP!" brand cheap parts I will admit.

So I removed everything in front of the retaining plate and ring and reset it all to the proper torque values. The steering wheel still bound at certain points with the steering column, but has since faded.

I removed the assembly again, this time past the retaining plate and ring and studied the movement of the cancelling action. Every part was originally installed correctly, so I was baffled why it didn't work. I had made sure to clean every part, properly lube them, and double check my work with repair manuals and articles from thirdgen.org. I replaced the new springs with the original springs I kept, I threw all the other original broken parts in the garbage before I found out I had problems...

I reassembled everything, only thing changed was the original cancelling springs were installed, and bolts torqued properly again, and now the turn signal cancels consistently only on right turns. It does not cancel at all ever for left turns.

I am really confused, so maybe someone can shed some light on what I did wrong, or if the parts just suck. I ordered an AC Delco cancel cam just make sure the tiny plastic **** tolerance is correct with the cheap HELP! brand part. Why doesn't it cancel to the left? My steering wheel has the number 1105 on it and I could swear it's a "Challenger" series wheel if that has any significance. I bought it and the steering column adapter over 5 years ago, don't have any of the original instructions, and the part is discontinued. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Cornwallis

Oh yeah! I remember that post. I used it to refer my column to. Everything looks in order from that post. I'm still stumped. My AC Delco turn sign cancel cam arrived today. It at least gives me a reason to take it all apart again to triple check for any errors, unless it's the "HELP!" brand parts not working (think this is 3rd or 4th of same part for different vehicles) even though they used to work. Maybe I caught a dud...

If everything looks correct, then it may be that the steeringwheel/alignment is so far off that it's causing issues--especially if the car is pulling to one side.

Re: Grant Steering Wheel/Turn Signal Woes

Alright, so I installed the AC Delco turn signal cancel cam and took the original cancelling springs out and replaced them from the "HELP!" brand universal kit. Now I have no turn signal cancelling.

I think the springs might be the culprit. I've been paying attention to the feel of the springs in the steering wheel during a turn during the past week (real easy...) and I can feel them being barely pushed, not enough to actually cancel.

Are there specific springs I can buy to check this out? Is there something I'm missing? I did have my brother and father look over everything before I patched it back up, and things just gotten worse so far.

JamesC - I don't remember the steering wheel being so far off before, but maybe I didn't pay attention. I really think something changed however, because it feels wrong. I'll finally be able to jack the car up tomorrow to check the entire suspension for damage/wear/alignment. It feels more like the steering wheel should be pointed a certain direction (there is some play in the steering, maybe 5 degrees in each direction which isn't much percentage-wise) rather than the car is pulling to one side, but the roads and highways I drive on everyday are daunting with traffic, construction, and more traffic. I'll let you know after I find a flat patch tomorrow to test if it's pulling one side or another anyway, thanks for the tip.
