1991 Trans Am Steering Wheel Swap

Hi Guys,

I have a 1991 TA, I really am not a huge fan of the bulky airbag equipped steering wheel but want to keep an original looking appearance so I went with the 88 Trans am wheel. What I noticed is the 88 wheel "rubs" my steering colum. It mounts fine and is working fine just makes small noises from time to time because of the rubbing when turning the wheel. Has anybody else done a swap and ran into this? Any thoughts on a "fix"

Thank you

Scott

Shouldn't be any rubbing really. is there loose plastic behind the wheel? Also you can get that steering wheel in leather. Look in late 80s Bonneville's, Grand prixs had them in leather but the column in those cars is square shaped so it might look odd.

Leather would be nice, might just have mine wrapped. The issue is depth, the original airbag equipped wheel was not as deep as the 88 wheel I have now that is why it is rubbing. I can back off the nut a bit to accomodate but I do not feel too terribly comfortable in doing that. I can picture that fun ride driving along and suddenly I have a NASCAR quick release wheel in my lap! Thanks for the reply!

That's a trans am wheel? I thought all the earlier TAs came with the 3spoke wheel? Either way, I had a similar issue when I put a momo wheel/hub on my '91 trans am. The steering column plastics had small speedbump-like protrusions on the inside of the column that the adapters 'caught' on. I could turn and the car would hold certain turns! It was bad news. I yanked the wheel, grabbed a dremel and trimmed up the points that contacted and have driving on that wheel/hub combo for the better part of nine years and 160k miles.

That wheel was the std firebird and trans am wheel for 88-89 only. No three spoke after 87. GtA had the radio control wheel option 88-89.

How a bout a spacer washerunder the wheel?

I thought about a spacer but it seems the shaft would be too short for a spacer. If my shaft was a little longer I would absolutely use spacer, only need a mm or 2 tops! Soo close! I may end up "trimming the back side of the wheel if possible... have to look at it again.
