For the guys who have done sound deadening...

What product did you use? How much of it did you need? And what would you have done differently? Sound deadening is going to be the next project I tackle since I'm hoping to get some new carpet in the next few months. Any and all insight will be appreciated.

+1 for fatmat. Worked well and reasonably priced.

Good idea with the neoprene. When I was ordering my seat covers mr mike recommended I used closed cell foam which is like beer koozie material. I'm going to use that in my hatch area and see what happens.

Re: For the guys who have done sound deadening...

I have used Dynamat and Fat Mat. I think the Fat Mat doesn't lay down as well or work as well as the Dynamat. Google 'half price Dynamat' and you should find some deals. I am going to use that and the Dynaliner on my Z28 when I gut it for paint next month- 1/4 inch Dynaliner on the roof and 1/2 inch on the floor. Yes, do the roof- and i wouldnt go cheap on the stuff for the roof- you want it to stay up there!! On the doors: do the outside of the inner skin AND the inside of the outer skin. So both sheets of metal get a layer on the sides closest to you. It will make an ungodly difference to exterior noise, the efficiency of your A/C and your doors will feel like the doors on a Lexus when you close them!!
Lastly, DON'T buy the roller specifically for it- go get one at Lowes for about $2! Same damn thing! Good luck!

Re: For the guys who have done sound deadening...

I have used Brown Bread for years on two Camaros and my Tahoe. I had 3 JL 12 w3's and a 1000 Watt RMS Soundstream amp. For the IROC I have now I'm using Second Skin paint/brush on to kill the rattles from my system and Ensolite CCF over the rear hump, tranny tunnel, wheel Wells, and doors to keep out the road noise.

Sound dampener does little to kill exhaust/road noise in the car, but keeps the sound from resonating inside the cabin and keeps rattling panels down from a stereo. The CCF or neoprene used above will help keep road and exhaust noise from coming in the cabin. If you have the $ I would do both.

I got 2 gallons of Second Skin and 28sq ft of Ensolite. I'll probably try the Peel and Seal for a few critical spots around the sail panel speakers and rear hatch where my box will sit. I've heard it works well if heated up before applied and it's a fraction of the cost of Dynamat and the like. I only have 1 JL 12W6 going in so I'm using the spray on. If you plan on a big system I would go with conventional roll on dampener. Expect to use 50-75 sq ft if you really want to get the whole thing done and drop some $$$. I'll have $300 wrapped up in all my stuff when it's done.

Edit:

I installed Grace Vycor roof flashing yesterday, a butyl based product about 25 mils thick. People have had issues with roof flashing sticking so I heated mine up with a heat gun and applied it to a clean surface. It will take me 4 rolls of the 4in x 75ft to get my interior mostly covered. I let it cool after installing then heated up the panel with a heat gun and pealed it off. The stuff sticks well when applied correctly.

Re: For the guys who have done sound deadening...

I used fatmat as well. Three layers of the stuff, my doors sound like a door closing rather than a can being kicked down the street. My exhaust is pretty loud and now the droning noise is gone. I can have a normal conversation. A must do for third gens.

Fatmat works great, 140 dollars for 100 square feet and roller. I only did floor plans and doors and still have a roll left http://www.fatmat.com/bulk/fatmat/100.html

Re: For the guys who have done sound deadening...

I just did mine this weekend. I used peal and seal. and before you go oh my god why would you use that. I'm not one to just go out and do something i read and read and read about them. I had concerns about smell. melting goo or anything else that might happen that is bad. i happened to find a thread in another forum about useing it. Just did a search on alternative to dynamat. and a hot rod forum showed up. in that thread going back to 2008. most of teh posters were in the southwest and had heats upto 110 degrees in the sun all day with now issues. with melting or smell. and only one guy had issues but it was because he put down bedliner first and it pealed off the bedliner. If you look at the classic dynamat it's the same as the peal and seal. another usefull tid bit the lizard skin stuff is just latex paint mixed with micro ballons interesting to know. but anyways the peal and seal worked fine. i rolled it down just like you would dynamat. I used a heat gun to get it real sticky first. then went back and sealed all the seams with aluninum duct tape just to be sure if it did get gooy it would stay under the tape and not in the carpet. after teh system install when the bass hit the car would rattle door handles everything . now with the peal and seal it doesn't. the system has a much cleaner sound and honestly seems to be louder. the interior isn't all back together yet but it is getting there i also added carpet to the side panels which took most of the time.

Re: For the guys who have done sound deadening...

I just used no name brand AluButyl. I have used fat mat and the cheaper no name brand stuff was better than fat mat. I use 2.2mm stuff. The no name had a MUCH tougher alu foil on it, the fat mat broke through a lot easier when rubbing the stuff into beads and dimples with the roller handle. The no name stuff was a lot "tackier" also without heat applied (I do apply heat to shape it)

Re: For the guys who have done sound deadening...

After reading a lot of reviews online about all the stuff that's available, I went ahead and ordered 36 square feet of Dynamat Xtreme. I only wanna do this once so I want what the pro stereo installers and upholsterers recommend and use.

Re: For the guys who have done sound deadening...

I used Dynamat for the entire vehicle and it was worth every penny to just do it right the first time and never have to look back. It does add weight to the vehicle and it is very time consuming but when done right, it will make a world of difference. JMO.

Ebay Germany LOL Just buy a no name brand of that stuff, it's all pretty much the same and you won't be paying for a name on the foil
