I've been told my the dealer upon checking on GM #'s, and fitment that 1982-1988 were a particular # Door Latch and 89-92 were another number are are NOT compatible.

Does anyone know the actual DIFFERENCE between the two types and why they won't work on a 92 Camaro's door?

Perhaps even a graphical comparison?

 

Odd, since I have 92 doors on my 82, seem to latch fine to me.

 

The GM part number for 1982-1988 are different than 1989-1992 and dealers are all telling me that they are NOT compatible. If you go to buy one or the other online (which are ALL DISCO) they say they are NOT compatible. I was always under the impression 82-92 parts as far as door were compatible. So something Internally must be different..

 

Well I swapped the doors as a unit so they could be different inside but they latched just like the 82s did from the outside.

Actually I was a bit wrong, there are 3 different latches from 1982-1992 which apparently are still being said NOT to be interchagable..

The Part numbers are as followed:

[1982 - 1987]

RH - 16608234
LH - 16608235

[1988]

RH - 20696712
LH - 20696713

1989 - 1992]

RH - 16608068
LH - 16608069

WHAT exactly is different?? And does that guarantee that a 1982-1987 will NOT fit a 1992's door??

I don't know the actual differences, but I had 88 Firebird doors on my 83 Z38. Fit and latched no problem. The retainers for the pull rods on the inside of the door were different between the two. 83 had metal and 88 had plastic. I'm curriours as to what GM's reasoning is too.

 

I copy/pasted a message about this asking for the difference to a LOT of dealers last night including GM canada and GM USA.. So far of the replied received, ALL have been what appears to be pre-written/selected messages indicating it is Discontinued and may not be available anymore. (Which is NOT what I asked, sigh)
