Leather Wrap steering wheel question

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/images/smilies/help.gif

Does the leather wrap steering wheel [with air bag space in the center] of a 4th gen fit on a 91 convertible steering column that used to have a leather wrap steering wheel [with air bag space in center] on it?

There is one on ebay right now and i dont want to shell out the bucks for an item that wont work.

The leather got damaged really bad on it and i took the rest of the leather off of it. The soft rubber foamy steering wheel that was under the leather is in good condition but i want the original leather back on it again.

Not those one piece leather ones that you can buy at Pep Boys.

I didn't see this thread anywhere else. So sorry in advance if it is misposted.

Re: Leather Wrap steering wheel question

I had a 4th gen steering wheel on my '91 Firebird for a little while and it was a direct bolt on. For more info on compatiblity check out the link.

Good luck.

Re: Leather Wrap steering wheel question

THANKS for the quick reply!!! i was looking to take the plastic airbag cover off of the 91 steering wheel; along with the airbag and place that cover on the 93 leather steering wheel since the one on Ebay does not show or have the plastic air bag cover. This should be amusing if it fits. Im sure going to have to wear goggles in case the airbag deploys.

Re: Leather Wrap steering wheel question

It is said that it is best to remove the airbag fuse before you work on the airbag. Also, although the steering wheels are interchangeable, I do not believe the airbags are. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, one is a four bolt connection and the other is a two bolt connection. I don't have them readily available to check as I've changed both my Firebirds to the older three-spoke steering wheels.

Re: Leather Wrap steering wheel question

Yes, the airbags should be completely incompatible between the two steering wheels as far as fit and function, even if you're looking at a 4th gen wheel from a Firebird and not a Camaro.

Unless you just like the look of airbags, I'd go with an earlier wheel. I was in the same situation (factory leather wheel in my '91, previous owner peeled the entire top half of the leather cover off), and that's what I ended up doing. IMO, they haven't put a decent looking wheel in a Firebird since 1986 or so (whatever the last year for the 3 spoke was before they went to the same 4 spoke steering wheel that was used in everything from Grand Am's to 6000's).
