Hatch Support shocks

Hey all, the struts just gave out for my hatch on my 89, and I am wondering about the difference for the struts.. Right now, I have it as a shaved spoiler, but I am planning on adding one soon. Would it be bad for the car or the shocks to go ahead and buy the struts that are meant for the hatch with a spoiler, or do I need to buy the struts for no spoiler and no wiper, and then buy them once I get the spoiler? If you know what I'm trying to explain or ask? Haha. Thanks in advance, Jeremy.

If you be careful opening the hatch until there's a spoiler back on it you should be okay getting the ones for a spoiler.

We carry a pretty good selection of hatch and hood struts on our website. Here's a link to them. Pontiac Firebird Hatch and Hood Struts

Re: Hatch Support shocks

I've been using the stronger ones after swapping from a hatch with the heavy flat spoiler and haven't had any issues. (Been years now.)
That said, some have noticed the rear deck lid move back over time but I'm not sure if that's related.
Different spoilers weigh differently too so make sure you are actually getting the right strut for what you have.

There was also issues with how long the struts lasted so some searching on here may help with that.

Re: Hatch Support shocks

If you open your hatch with the key and not the release button, you won't have a problem with the stronger struts(you can hold the hatch so it won't fly open). So I would buy the stronger struts and not worry about buying a second set.
