Steering Column Compatibility
Hey everyone. I have an 89 Camaro RS, with no tilt, and hi/lo wipers. I took a look at an 88 firebird steering column that has tilt and delay wipers. Is it possible to swap that into my camaro? Would I need to do any wiring for the delay to work/wipers to work at all? I need the tilt since I'm 6'4", thanks in advance.

Re: Steering Column Compatibility
Im assuming your car is a 5 speed? If the column from the 88 is from an automatic there there will be a difference right there. a 5 speed has a key release lever while an automatic does not. If your car has VATS than the 88 column will not work as just a bolt in. I may be wrong but i believe an 89 5 speed column is a one year piece due to being vats and no airbag but someone else will comment on that.

It's a 5 speed, yes. The firebird was originally an automatic but the person who owned it put a 5 speed in it, so I'm assuming that problem would be solved. Any good links on the VATS? I'd like to know more or possibly know what exactly to do before I go out and pick the column from the firebird up. Still curious about the wiper column as well.

Re: Steering Column Compatibility
As said above , the columns are very option specific. You can use a cruise control on a non cruise, just have an extra switch. You can use a delay column, but you'll need a delay wiper motor to make it work. Search here for details on VATS delete. Any VATS column will work if you match the module to the key for the column.
You can swap a tilt column in if it matches the other options, no issues.
82-84 have different wiring harnesses, 90-92 have airbag BS.
You can rewire for accessories, but the columns aren't that easy to work on. Converting manual to auto and vice versa is quite difficult, so that's the most important consideration.

Re: Steering Column Compatibility
Is it possible to take the VATS out of my old column and use it in the new one? The firebird is a manual and so is my Camaro so hopefully I won't have to mess with that.

Re: Steering Column Compatibility
Possible, but difficult. You would have to swap the ignition cylinder and wiring.
Easier to delete the vats in your car and use the 88 column.
