1990 Camaro RS Speedo Problem
I have a 1990 Camaro RS, 305 V8, T-5 transmission. My car has the electric speedo, not the cable driven. My odometer & trip odometer work correctly. I drove a loop around town in the Camaro and then the same loop again in my truck and both showed the exact same mileage driven. My speedometer, however, is not working anything near correctly. It stays at "0" until I'm deep into third gear, going into fourth. At that point it starts moving, but only at 10-12 mph. As you know, rolling in fourth gear would be in the +/- 45 mph range. Any ideas on where to start? I first thought it was the gauge cluster itself or the VSS sending unit, but if the odometer & trip odometer are both functioning correctly, that can't be the case. This is a new problem for the car; the speedo has worked perfectly up until now. I'm the second owner, and I've had the car since 1999. I've been in/over/under/thru almost everything on it, and I'm 100% sure no one has "futzed" with it. I'm stumped & not sure where to look next. I've had the cluster out & checked all connections, etc. twice now. Any/all help is greatly appreciated!

I have done a few forum searches & read dozens of threads hoping to find this already documented, but with no luck. A couple were vaguely similar, but nothing actually matched my problem. If there's an existing thread that addresses this, can someone point me in the right direction?

Re: 1990 Camaro RS Speedo Problem
I does seem to be a problem with the speedometer. If you removed the speedo from the cluster and start to take it apart you will find that there is a printed board that controls it. Maybe there is a bad resistor? I would just find one from a junk yard and see if it solves the problem. Or maybe find some one that has a 90 - 92 camaro that you could swap clusters to see if its the speedometer. Just because the odometer works doesn't mean the speedometer is good.
