I am new to Trans Ams. Even though I always admired them from afar I never owned one until just recently. I am now the proud owner of a 1984 Trans Am now. Bought it from the original owner who took really good care of it.I have it at my mechanic's getting things a tuned up and a couple of other minor things done to it. He is a hell of a mechanic (great reputation for fantastic work in the area) but does not know much about the actual T-Top itself.

My question is this.

Next to the lever to unlatch the T-Top there is a hole with a silver circle in it. In the middle of the silver circle there is a slot. Above all this is the word "Lock". What is this supposed to lock? I was thinking the lever mechanism for the T-Top but you can open and close them just fine to take the tops off.

That slot is actually a key cylinder. usually the door lock will match those as well. When its in the lock position it will not allow the latch to open the ttop. So yes, it locks the ttop on to the car.
