Interior rust prevention advice

1990 iroc convertible

Car history : sat for 14 years with previous attempts on getting it running.

I bought it and got it running. Just took out all interior including carpet and this is what I found

Does not seem to bad, this is the first time I restore anything so please advice me.

I'm thinking wire wheel and some sanding then por15?

Re: Interior rust prevention advice

I'm not sure where you are located but it's been my thought that interior rust like that is caused by people tracking in salt via their boots etc. For some reason it's typically on the front drivers and rear passengers side. FWIW, my Berlinetta was rust free due to the rubber backing included on the deluxe carpet option.

But yeah, clean it up and paint it. POR15 has a couple of additional pretreatments (metal clean and metal ready iirc) if you go that route and POR 15 does not stick to smooth metal.

Ahh, I've seen a Thirdgen posted here from Hawaii with severe rust so maybe ocean related? Lol, I don't have much to add for that, been in MN my whole life.

Re: Interior rust prevention advice

That's very minimal rust. Just what you get when the carpet pad traps a little moisture.
Wire wheel and por 15 will work great. Don't spread the por 15 beyond the bare / rusty metal , it doesn't stick well to paint. Just a little overlap over existing paint where the paint is heavily scuffed/sanded.
Always nice to see good floors on a third gen!
