changing instrument cluster cause a tamper light?

Hey, quick question. My Tach stopped working on my 83 Z28. I have wanted to change out my instrument cluster for a while anyways since I hate the 85mph speedo. There are a few camaros, including an 85, at the pick n pull here, and I can pick up a used cluster for 38$. Before I do, I know some cars( newer ones at least) will set off a bright orange tamper light if you change out the cluster, because the odometer will be off. Is this the same with older camaros like ours? If so, what do I have to do to change my cluster without getting that stupid light? My car sat for a while and I am getting it back on the road. Thank you!

its plug and play from 82 - 89 . there are some diffrences in font in 82-84ish. one thing you have to watch out for is ,if you have a v8 car you cant use a v6 tach and vice versa. however , theres a guy on here that repairs tachs . and hes quite reasonable . i have one of his units and am pleased. i forget his name . but you can do a search

Those years the cluster might plug into any other 82-89 dash harnesses - but they are NOT all directly compatible.

There were "style" changes thru the years,..... ( 82 Camaro gauges are all 1 year only for example ) but the "Plug-&-Play" year ranges are 82-85 and 86-89. That type of ( gauge ) cluster used 2 different printed circuits. The dash wiring was changed in 86 and if the early cluster is installed in an 86-89 there will be a conflict with the BRAKE warning light and 1 or 2 of the backlighting bulbs.

P.S. There is no "tamper" light when the cluster this removed and replacement clusters odometer reading can be set to match the cars actual mileage.

Re: changing instrument cluster cause a tamper light?

Thanks a lot guys that is what I was hoping to hear. So for my 83, I can just put in an 82-85 one and it will be plug and play as long as they are both v8's?(mine is a v8)

Yup, Any 82-85 gauge cluster is fully compatible with the 83 Camaro dash harness. The only difference between the V6 and V8 cluster is the Tachometer; and that can be swapped pretty easy !
