Grant Steering WTF?

So I have an '87 Z-28. The PO had a Grant Steering wheel on the car, but it had paint comming off and some rust, so I pulled it off to repaint it. Upon doing so I discovered 2 of the bolts were stripped pretty bad, and one was quite large(I'm pretty sure it was a seat bracket bolt). The center nut was finger tight and the wheel pretty much fell off upon removal of said center nut (went and got a puller for nothin). The piece behind where the bolts attach the wheel to the column, I'm gonna call it a hub because I don't know the actual term, was busted all to hell from the overly large bolt that had been forced into it. I'm trying to figure out if this is the adapter kit from Grant, or if the PO rigged this up himself and figured a bolt was as good as any.

Re: Grant Steering WTF?

That's the adapter from Grant. It needs pulled off with a puller. Normally, you would use one of the Y shaped pullers and thread 3 bolts into the adapter. If the threads on the adapter are as messed up as the adapter looks, you're probably better off using a 3 jaw pulley type puller on it. Just be careful not to distort the threads on the center where the large retaining nut screws on to.

Re: Grant Steering WTF?

Yeah that is how the grant and most aftermarket wheels work. The spline press fit is on the adapter hub and wheel bolts to said hub. Unlike stock where the spline press fit hub is made into the steering wheel.

What you shown is in fat the grant steering wheel adapter kit.

You will use a steering wheel or harmonic damper puller to pull the adapter hub off of steering column.

Center bolt was loose probably cause they did not reinstall the snap ring.

I have used grant wheels for years. I got a Grant classic chrome 3 spoke on my '88 camaro and my S10, and a Grant GT on our '87 suburban.

Re: Grant Steering WTF?

For the sake of safety, find and replace the retaining clip (even if the nut loosens, the clip won't allow it to come off—don't ask me how I know ).

Ya know, I had been hearing a metallic ringing from what I thought was the column and when I pulled the steering wheel I thought I heard somethung fall out. I bet it was that retaining ring, and it was making all that ruckus inside of the wheel. I'll see if I can find it when I get home.
