Can keys be cut from VIN

I only have the one set of keys and they are very worn out. I can't really cut keys from them or I'll just end up with another worn out set. Wondering if they can be cut from VIN information?

They can be. Have $65CAN handy? That seems to be about the going rate if one does an internet search. It's easier if you have the key code that's on the knock-outs.

Re: Can keys be cut from VIN

I tried this once when I lost my only set of keys for my car.... GM couldn't find the info from my VIN to make a new key :/

Had to send for a locksmith to come to my house and do his magic.

Yes, if you have a good dealer from about 89 an up they can.

Re: Can keys be cut from VIN

I just tried this with a 95 Trans Am and my local dealer couldn't even cut a VATS key anymore. They did get me all the info as far as what VATS resistor value and the key code for the doors and ignition, though. Seems that it may be hit or miss as far as them actually being able to cut the key for you goes.

Re: Can keys be cut from VIN

I've wanted to replace my ignition cylinder with a new VATS unit. Then use the new key from the kit, take my old one with the resistor in it and have them make a new key like that. But as AmorgetRS said, you'll have to know if your local dealer can make one in the first place.

Re: Can keys be cut from VIN

If its an 89+, the dealer should have no problem pulling the key codes. Anything prior is a crapshoot. If the dealer really want to they can call the help desk for key codes and sometimes get the older ones, but it takes around 2 days.

Source: I'm a parts manager at a Chevy dealership and recently got the codes from GM for my 86 Iroc.
