Repro Camaro shift plate, ashtray lid won't close?

Just got a reproduction shift plate for my '91 Camaro, and the ashtray lid won't fully close when I put my old ashtray in it. It gets about half an inch from closing.

Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?

No...but this is interesting however...where did you buy it from?

Sure you got the right ashtray? Early and late are different, Camaro and Firebird are different, etc.

Re: Repro Camaro shift plate, ashtray lid won't close?

Bought it from a member here on the used parts board. Was sold as new, came in the original box and plastic. Shipping box said Eckler's, so I'd guess it came from there originally.

Didn't know they changed the ashtrays. My car is a '91, the shift plate is for a 1990-92. I have no reason to believe that my ashtray isn't original, it fit my old (presumably original) shift plate just fine. Definitely looks different different from my 91 T/A ashtray though.

Had the same problem with a Hawk's repro shift plate on my '88 IROC.

find an early METAL ash tray...that's where the problem is. Later cars use a plastic ash tray, and it sits higher.

Well that makes sense. Pretty dumb of them to design a 1990-92 shift plate for an earlier ashtray that no 1990-92 is going to have, but at least that answers my question. Will be on the lookout for one. Thanks!

Re: Repro Camaro shift plate, ashtray lid won't close?

Update: finally got a hold of a NOS metal 82-87 ashtray. Fitment is better, but ashtray lid still will not fully close. Comes within about a quarter inch of being flush with the shift plate.

Between this, the yellow plastic gear indicator slider that scraped all the paint off the shift indicator window, and the shift indicator that I had to shove pieces of paper in between to show the correct gear as it moves, this repro shift plate gets 2/5 stars IMO. Really glad I didn't pay full price for it.
