NOS or Aftermarket Seat Foam / Bun / Cushions

I'm in the beginning phases of having the seats of my 92 Z28 reupholstered. I have already purchased 2 hides of red leather and now need to purchase new foam for the driver's seat as it is compressed. I've seen the threads where steam was used to rejuvenate the original foam, but I've yet to see anyone commenting on the longevity of it. I think I will just replace it for that extra peace of mind. I see that PUI makes replacement foam and was wondering about the quality and how it compares to the original foam. I've seen NOS foam for sale also, but unsure of its condition after so many years. It's new as in never been used, but old in age. Will this make a difference? Anyone have any long term testimonials about the replacement foam whether aftermarket or NOS?

Don't have experience with NOS foam, but my foam seems fine 27 years later and is original. That would suggest NOS should be as well.

I've wondered about putting some sort of lumbar support into these. Would be nice for aging old backs.....

Can't imagine much in the way of NOS upholstery or seat foam still out there. If there is, it'll probably be priced so high that it'd be hard to justify using.

Steam is a temporary fix. If you can buy new, I would get that. There has to be some sort of degradation of the foam after 25 or more years of laying around, if you can even find NOS.

I have some Black NOS fabric, and NOS Recaros. They were not easy to find. Gotta find some Dark Graphite fabric like the style used on the Carmine red cars. I would not be worried to go to hawks and buy some repop foam.

The NOS foam on my Recaros has not degraded at all. But to be fair they have also been in a box since new.

an alternative for the driver's seat is to find decent shape passenger seat foam.

the new foam available can be a bit stiff and big

Re: NOS or Aftermarket Seat Foam / Bun / Cushions

There is NOS foam available on eBay. It is pricey, but if the aftermarket foam was considered inferior in shape and/or quality I would be willing to pay up. My concern was possible degradation of the NOS. The foam in the passenger and rear seats is fine, but they haven't seen much use. ( The PO was an older lady with no kids) I'm ok with the aftermarket foam being stiffer, hopefully that will help keep its shape. If it's larger, I guess I should replace both sides so they match.

Aftermarket? Recall the brand? How long so far? How close shape and quality wise was it to the original?

I bought new seat foam for my driver seat through Classic Industries, along with new vinyl upholstery. Both seats match and the new aftermarket foam feels great. Very happy with it.

Re: NOS or Aftermarket Seat Foam / Bun / Cushions

Keep in mind: our cars were built from 82-92. That means, given the 3 years most car companies take to bring a car to market, that the design for the thirdgen can date from 1979. Which means that a lot of the parts associated with the design may have been ordered from suppliers from that era. So, worst case, our carpets, seats etc could have been manufactured for production assembly as much as 38 years ago!! Get new seat foam- I know I'M going too!

I'm pretty sure when I researched it for mine, all the foam was made by the same manufacturer. The quality is great.

That's what I found as well, everything was PUI sold by different vendors. Ordered some yesterday.
