So I'm looking at having my seats professionally re-upholstered. Not a kit, but actual custom covers made. ....and if I'm gonna do it, I wanna make sure I have the seats I want in there for the long term.
...and I don't care for the support, or lack there of, in the stock seats. I know you can repad/foam them, but that's a little bandaid. 4th gen seats are better....but....just a little. On the OTHER side of the coin, I've sat in racing seats that are SO supportive, they're hard to get in and out of!!!! Heck, I don't like that and I KNOW my wife won't wanna sit in em. I'd like the equivalent of modern, performance car seat, but maybe not quite full on race/aftermarket. heck my dad's '12 Corvette seats would be plenty.
I can look at pictures all day long, but it's really hard to get a feel for what you're looking at.
When I was looking into seats I read nearly all of the stock seats in newer vehicles were too tall for our cars. There are the plethora of inexpensive eBay seats, I've sat in a couple but they all feel cheap. I had a set of ProCar sportsman seats that were OK. Comfortable enough, but they just felt cheaper than a newer OE seat. ProCar has a few that are affordable that are made from a metal or fiberglass shell that might be worth looking into. The best seats I see in terms of comfort and holding ability are the carbon fiber molds that are upholstered but those are high dollar.
You could try going to some of the large used car lots that deal in all makes and models and "try" some seats out. Take a tape measure to get rough measurements for "fit". A lot of great factory seats out there, may find something that fits the bill. Just have to deal with the salesman hassle. I currently have a couple red leather hides and waiting on new foam to have my seats done. Considering having extra foam added to my bolsters to help modernize my seats.
Take your time, get what fits. They are very important to your enjoyment.
I went with Corbeau TRS - recliner. I had to get leather to avoid their logos (I hate logos!), or one could have them re-covered to taste.
I asked if they had any blemishes, they had a passanger seat and I cannot tell even after they told me - saved some dough. I ordered extra leather hide to re-upholster the backs, door panel inserts, and console cover. It's good to "tie in" the color of the seats to other parts of the interior so it flows well and doesn't look like a "cut and paste" addition. Whatever seats and fabric you choose, you should take this into consideration. https://corbeau.com/reclining-seats/trs.html
Thanks for the input guys...I've been reading a good bit and seeing what people like.
TEDSgrad, my goal is to pick a fabric combo close to stock, and all four seats will have the same fabric, as well as the door panels, so i think they'll look pretty much like they belong!
