Engine: 5.0L 305 TPI

T-Top Trim Panel Rattle and Lock Operation Service

T-Top Trim Panel Rattle/Squeak and Lock Operation Service.
Applicable Vehicles:
1982-1992 Pontiac Firebird w/ RPO Code "CC1" T-Top Removable Glass Roof Panels.
1982-1992 Chevrolet Camaro w/ RPO Code "CC1" T-Top Removable Glass Roof Panels.


NOTE: 1991 Firebird T-Top Panel shown for Illustrative purposes (Camaro will be similar in design)

Safety NOTE: Handle Glass T-Top Panel carefully and wear PPE To prevent Injury.

Some 1982-1992 Camaro and Firebird owners may notice a rattling noise (or squeak) coming from the roof/headliner area of the passenger compartment inside the vehicle. This condition occurs due to Wear on the Panel Retaining Lock Pins or a Loose Trim Panel. This Service procedure shows a step by step guide on how to eliminate a rattle noise based from a loose T-Top Trim panel.

What you will need to perform this Service Procedure.
1. Glass Cleaner
2. Acrysol (Or equivalent Alchohol based cleaner)
3. Lint free cloth
4. Gel based ACDelco Super Lubricant (Or equivalent gel based automotive lubricant) PN#12371287
5. Aerosol/Spray based ACDelco Super Lubricant (Or Equivalent Spray based automotive lubricant) PN#12346241
6. Nylon Bristle brush (for easier application of Gel based Lubricant) -Optional-
7. Ph.2 Phillips head screw Driver or bit with Driver.
8. T20 Torx head screw Driver or bit with Driver.
9. Scissors or new razor blade.
10. One sided adhesive backed Foam Tape
(Foam Tape and all lubricants arrr available at your Local GM Dealership)

Service Procedure.
1. Remove concerning T-Top roof panel(s) and inspect attached trim panel for a gap between the Glass mounted Mechanism base and the Plastic Trim panel.
1.1N. If a gap is present, Proceed with Service Procedure and continue to step two.
1.2N. If a gap is not present. Inspect panel lock pins for excessive wear or damage.
2. Remove the three (3) Ph.2 Phillips head screws, one (1) T20 Torx head screw and Release handle from Panel assembly.
2.1. Remove trim panel from assembly and inspect mechanism for damage. If damage is found consult alternative forum for a procedure regard T-Top Lock mechanism damage.
2.2N. If no damage is found Continue to Step three (3)
3. Using Nylon brush apply Gel based ACDelco Super Lubricant to Panel retaining Lock pins.
4. Apply Aerosol/Spray ACDelco lubricant to mechanical gear assembly beneath handle Location and check operation.
4.1N. If mechanical operation is smooth and does not generate a squeak type noise continue to step 5.
4.2N. If Mechanical Operation is not smooth and/or continues to generate a noise, inspect for damage. If damage is found consult ab alternative forum for a repair procedure.
5. Clean trim panel of dirt and surface contaminants using Acrysol.
5.1N. Check panel retaining lock pin plates for foam around curve. If foam is present, remove carefully using a razor blade and clean surface using Acrysol.
5.2N. If foam is not present continue to clean surface with Acrysol.
6. Measure and cut three (3) pieces of adhesive backed foam tape at approximately 3 + 1/2 Inches.
7. Apply Adhesive backed Foam tape on the ends of the trim panel and along the center of the panel next to the center screw hole.
8. Reinstall Trim panel to T-Top assembly and secure using the existing screws.
9. Install T-Top release handle w/Torx head screw. And check panel gap.
10. If gap is still present check condition of panel for warping.
10.1N. If warping is present replace panel and repeat service procedure.
10.2N. If gap is not longer present, clean glass using glass cleaner and lint free cloth, install T-Top assembly to vehicle and perform test drive under various road conditions.
10.3N. If noise is still reevaluate noise source.
10.4N. If source of rattle/squeak is generated from T-Top Panel check Panel Retaining Lock pins for wear or damage.
10.5N. If Lock pins are worn or damaged see alternative Forum for repair procedure.
