Odometer not working on my 91 Firebird
Odometer not working on my 91 Firebird
Guys,
I recently noticed that the odometer on my 91 Formula Firebird isn’t working. I’ve owned the car for like 6 years but hardly ever drive it and just noticed the other day that it wasn’t working. Not sure when it stopped. The speedometer is working. Is this a common problem? What’s the likely problem? How tough is the fix? Thanks for any assistance.
Mike.

Welcome fellow formula owner
The search feature on this site isn't the greatest so punch in what you're looking for on google and dig through this sites results there, much better.
Very common issue

Is this a common problem? YES
What’s the likely problem? Broken odometer gear.
How tough is the fix? Not hard but I don't know your skill level. Are you a bull in a china shop or a skilled Swiss watch maker?

Instructions for how to do the odometer gear replacement.

If you don't want to do the odometer gear replacement yourself then you can ship your instrument cluster to Atlanta Speedometer and they can perform the repairs. They wrote the above instructions for Odometer Gears the maker of the odometer gear kit.
If you decide to ship your instrument cluster in for repairs I highly suggest you package it for shipping very well. I recommend double boxing it with lots of padding between the inner and outer box. You just can't trust shippers today not to destroy everything in your box.

The common issue with this unit is a failed odometer and tripmeter. The speedometer can fail, but this issue is rare. We will repair the speedometer PCB for the speed issue regardless of there being a problem. We will also replace the failed gear which causes the odometer and trip to loose operation. We take great care in our work to make sure your speedometer head is in the best of condition, to give you many more years of service. Our repair does not just replace odometer gears, but also performs preventative maintenance to eliminate other known problems in the future. If you are experiencing any other issues/symptoms with this part, please call us before purchasing this repair 770-831-8802.
- Your Instrument Cluster is inspected, disassembled, repaired, and cleaned.
- Main odometer gear is replaced.
- Speedometer/Odometer PCB is repaired to prevent speedometer problems.
- Components containing electrolyte are replaced.
- Backlighting bulbs are replaced if requested. They can also upgrade the backlighting to LED.
- 5 year, unlimited mileage warranty (Halogen light bulbs warranted for one year. LEDs warranted for 5 years)

I endorse Atlanta speedometer... i didn't want to mess with it so i sent my cluster out to them. They did an AMZING job on the repair and replaced my bulbs etc...
It was a VERY fast turn around and they were more than helpful and friendly!

Thanks guys. I’m definitely capable of doing any repair needed from a technical standpoint but for me the primary issue is time. If I can cut short the time I have to invest in this it frees up time for my multiple other projects. I will put the cluster removal on my list of things to do and will send it out for overhaul.

Getting the cluster out was the hard part.
It honestly probably took more time to box it up and ship it than it would have to put the new part in.
