i want to start by thanking all here for the great support. I recently was going to pm john in RI. I worked on my writing a question on the heat door on a 84 Berlinetta. I reread it 1 last time, and figured out what the problem was. So John helped me fix it with out even knowing, thats great support. NOW on to my new heater box issue. Just above the pass side floor heat outlet i have a 3/4 inch gap in the box which runs all the way to drivers side. there is 2 inch foam tape covering the gap that i can see from the drivers side. i am unable to push it together. so in short the left side of the heater box is not installed correctly or maybe i am going crazy. Any help would be appreciated . worst case i pull the console and upper heat tubes to give me space to see.
drivers side left to right heater box attached to fire wall heater box attached to dash drivers side looking up see rubber membrane stopping movement of dash side heater box toward firewall passenger side split passenger side split
Pictures and an explanation as to whats happening. the heater box is split. the heater box has been worked on before i bought it. the rear section is attached to the firewall the front section is attached to the dash ( 2 screws under cruise control plate) . So far i pulled the console, dash top and several of the heat tubes. i still see no way to get them together. Drivers side is the side giving me trouble as the split is worse . Looking up there is a rubber membrane that will not allow the top to move toward the firewall. I see no way the Dash will move far enough to close up the gap.
All right now i will ask any ideas such as was the heater box shimmed away from the firewall ect. anything is possible since the car was worked on before.
fixed dash lights Has anyone seen the variable resister for dash lights on the left pod die ? all the parts are there but no land for the contacts to touch just black plastic, guessing it burnt off with a short, i soldered the wires from the input to the output so now max dash lights, which is better than no dash lights at night
I closer than before but not there yet Mechanics wire for a tight fit.
found my notes on 84 camaro when i bought it 15 years ago. No comments on heater box so i am assuming that it has been split all this time. Using heat, movement and a little force i got the box to the point of the first new picture. Problem is what i think is sound dampening has gotten hard and sagged. Applying heat and a little dry lube, over time it made it so i could move the two halves together. Problem is the rubber still has a habit of splitting the box in two. Third picture shows my temporary fix, mechanics wire holding it together. In a year or 15 I thing my wire can be cut and it will stay together.
