Lt1 swap
Lt1 swap
What does it mean when you put an lt1 in your third gen and it is running and your all like wow yes finally!! its done. Then you look at your alternator and it looks like it is doing a burnout? I mean its like smoking and its hot. I put the 4th gen guage cluster in my dash and hooked up the red alternator wire and according to the guage cluster it was allright. I'm guessing i should put the switched 12v with the 470 ohm resister into the red wire on the back of the alternator? thanks for the help.

On the LT1 alternator (fbody) there should be one red wire coming from the alternator to the gauge. it should be in the middle of the three small connector spaces in the alternator wiring harness, and it should feed 12v to the alternator.
What battery are you running? I was talking with a guy who runs an alternator refurbishing plant and has been rebuilding them for 30+ years. According to him cheap batteries like those sold in autozoo, advaced auto, walmart, etc. aren't made will real lead inside and tend to have a higher internal resistance which will prevent the alternator from getting to the ~14.5 so it will be constantly pumping out max amps and burn it up, and the laternators from LT1 fbody can pump out upto ~170 amps!
So if your sure its hooked up right i'd check and see what voltage your system is running at, and if you have an amp probe capable of high reading see how much your alternator is putting out.
