WARNING Buy MSD 6010 direct from MSD

If you are buying a 6010 box get it direct from msd. I recieved one from summit on 2/14/09. How romantic is that. LOL. Yesterday I called MSD tech and after he asked about grounds & 12 volt pos. he asked where I got it. When I told him & asked is that good or bad he was silent. Silence speaks volumes. Apparently summit and I'm sure other suppliers have old boxes that you can't crank the engine fast enough to produce spark without removing the spark plgs. A very large hurdle is trying to run a motor without spark plugs. Now I must send the box to msd to have repaired/ adj. This isn't so bad as my car is not moving for a while but would be if it was sunny & 70 deg. here. I don't see why msd wouldn't have the old boxes returned to them from suppliers for repair before shipping to cust. but I guess there the only game in town.So the moral here is if you get one get it direct from msd or this is another reason to just go f.i. Has anybody else run into this or am I just that lucky?

If your battery is not fully charged then you may not reach the cranking rpm needed to fire up the motor with the msd box. You also can not run a gear reduction starter because it will not reach the proper rpm ever needed by the box. What was your rpm on the msd software while cranking?

Re: WARNING Buy MSD 6010 direct from MSD

The motor is a BONE STOCK lq4 down to the original spark plugs. Verified crank rpm with msd and they are the ones who said send it back.Voltage while cranking is 10.97 also discussed that and rpm but I cannot recall what it was. At first I got the but it's not stock speach. Which if it was 12.5 to 1 with some monster cam or something I could understand. Right now it's not even turning over without a trans attached. I am confident they will fix it. It's just when you buy a part it should work. I'm now waiting for a pick up slip from msd. They wanted me to pay shipping at first but I'll wait for the slip as it should have been correct when I received it. But I will contact summit to see what they say.The only thing that concerns me is that if I get another from summit it might be the same.

Re: WARNING Buy MSD 6010 direct from MSD

it took 2 battery chargers to crank my 408.
buddy i sold my 6.0 to rebuilt it with forged pistons and whatnot. it took him a night of charging and on engine start to get enough rpm.

usually a problem on a fresh motor. 1st ive heard of it happening on a motor thats been ran.
if the new box doesnt fix the issue, id look into the size cables and such in your system.
good luck.

Re: WARNING Buy MSD 6010 direct from MSD

Thanks for the input. It uses the factory cables from the denali to to the starter and the block ground. I'm pretty **** about wiring. The reason I had an issue w/ msd is because it's a stock non rebuilt 80k 6.0 except for 1 new spark plug. It nice & loose spins over with no problem. That's why I streesed to msd this of all engines should turn fast enough to produce spark. I'm just glad I didn't move the battery to the rear yet to make me question the wiring or anything.
