LT1/WC T5?

hey, Im doing an lt1 swap and am gona keep the T5, its a 1992 rs and has the WC transmission with low miles and no grinds. I got the swap for an insane deal.

My question is, can I use my flywheel from the existing 305?

Re: LT1/WC T5?

as long as the flywheel is from a one piece rear main you should be able to use it. Not sure how it would affect the balance of the engine though.

Watch it go boom in the process, I knew a guy who had a 3550 in his '95 Z28 behind an LT1 and he ended up having it rebuilt 3 times from blowing out the 2-3 cluster.

The one that's in there wasn't designed for the torque that the LT1 puts out, it was made for a TBI car which wasn't very torquey to begin with. Many of them were destroyed behind the stock 305s.

Re: LT1/WC T5?

Agreed. I was going to stick with my T5 in an effort to save some money and switch to a t56 later down the road. I would of been too much of a hassel to later switch so i just forked over the extra money to use the t56. Better to have spent the extra dough and have a reliable transmission than watch your t5 explode and park your car.

Re: LT1/WC T5?

They are all different, my stocker lived behind 500 HP for a long time, it took a nitroused L98 with a carb to destroy 3rd gear.

BUT, i was running stock clutches and radials and didnt shift it to my potential but i did give it hell.

Re: LT1/WC T5?

You can do it, and the flywheel will work

what you'll need to change is the tailshaft housing of the trans for one from a 4th gen t5 car. That way you will have the correct VSS signal to make the PCM happy.....

It is a weak trans, so if you baby it for a year or so, it'll survive

Re: LT1/WC T5?

I am using my T-5 behind my LT-1 With no problems so far. I wouldn't say that I "beat " on it but I don't treat it very nicely either. It has held up to some drag strip duty as well, and driven home. I used the stock flywheel and upgraded to a centerforce clutch.

Re: LT1/WC T5?

What is the difference between the signals of the vss on a 92 t5 then a 93 t5. Is there any way I can wire in a resistor or something to get the right signal?

Re: LT1/WC T5?

T5 sends 4,000 pulse per mile
T56 sends 17 pulse per revolution
Im not sure what the later V6 T5 sends but it should be close to the T56

I think the tuner can fudge the conversion ratio close enough with the 3rd gen VSS, but to be correct the 4th gen T5 VSS/tail needs to be used as the VSS uses a magnetic sensor and the 3rd gen uses a gear drive

Re: LT1/WC T5?

Also the pcm for the lt1 came automatic, I dont know if that makes a difference. So can I pick up the back piece of the transmission and grap the vss and mount it on the back of my t5?

Re: LT1/WC T5?

The PCM will need a tune regardless of what you do just to get it running in the car. Tell your tuner that you're using a manual instead of the 4L60E

Also grab the reluctor ring on the output shaft. It is pressed on so you may have to get creative in removing it

Re: LT1/WC T5?

I was told the transmission it had on it was a 700r4, Im not too sure though. I havnt really looked into any tuners yet who would you suggest? I want the vats removed and it would be nice if I could use the stock vss.

Re: LT1/WC T5?

So for those of you who are using a T5 with an lt1, what did you do with the vss deal?

Re: LT1/WC T5?

No LT1's got the 700R4

93's for the 4L60 which was the updated version of the 700R4
94-97 used 4L60E's

To make it work properly you need to find a V6 T5 4th gen in the junkyard, I believe the one I pulled the parts from was a 3800 car, then you need the reluctor ring, speed sensor, and I believe iirc also the tailshaft housing, then install them into your trans.

When I got my PCM programmed I told them that I wanted the VSS deleted and whatever they did it works fine. I do have a mechanical cable driven speedometer though so that makes it a little easier I suppose. But bottom line is that it runs and idles fine and has no check engine lights or stored codes.

Re: LT1/WC T5?

The car will have trouble idling with the VSS input deleted. There are multiple inline cable to electric units for older drivelines with newer ECMs

Re: LT1/WC T5?

I talked too a tuner and he said he could make it it possable for the ECM to read the 3rd gen T5 VSS. So that makes it alot easier. With out a VSS the ECM most likely wont ever go into closed loop, and purge the evap sol. and stuff like that and im trying to keep the car as legal as possable. Im in CA.. everything is a pain here as far as aftermarket.

Pressed a 17 tooth sprocket onto the front yoke of the driveshaft and mounted an S-10 VSS pickup on a tab coming off the crossmember.

I'd sure be interested in hearing how your tuner is able to program for the T5 VSS considering the types of signals are COMPLETELY different

Re: LT1/WC T5?

Yeah he didnt go into detail? The sprocket fit onto the driveshaft without having to modify the drive shaft?

Re: LT1/WC T5?

No, measured the diameter of the yoke and had the sprocket bored out to be a press fit on it.

Just curious, but do you have a picture of this sensor and sprocket?

Sorry, long since lost. I had that setup over 5 years ago and changed to a T-56 shortly after. You might be able to find some photos if you search by my name as I think I posted a couple, but I really don't remember.
