LS1 power steering pump acting weird
Not sure if this is "normal", or if I did something to the pump by starting the car without fluid in the system (never ran it more than 15-20 seconds before putting fluid in).
It seems to be taking forever to "purge" itself from being dry. After getting fluid in it and water in the cooling system, it didn't work until I first moved the car enough to get some full turns. However, it is foaming up the fluid, and pressure has built up when I remove the cap after having run it.
I am running the PS cooler that came with the engine, but I don't see how that would make any difference.
Any thoughts?

air. have you tried lifting the weight off the front wheels and turning it side to side. i have also made a mess and loosened a line to bleed some out while turning it. man does it make a mess.

I haven't done that yet, but might tomorrow when I bring the car home from the shop. I have turned it back and forth with the tires on the ground.

Turing the wheels lock to lock several times with the engine off is how you bleed the air from the system. Its doubtful you damaged anything in such a short run time, so Id not worry too much about that. Fill it up and drive it
As for the foaming, what type of fluid did you put in there? They only take GM PS fluid. I wasnt aware of this when i filled mine so I used ATF like every other PS pump Ive owned. I was quite surprised when the reservoir vomited red foam all over my freshly cleaned engine bay

AMSOIL PS fluid. It's GM rated.
I'll try the lock-to-lock. I've got it up in the air right now for the driveshaft loop install.

Did the lock-to-lock, seemed a little better loading it on the trailer yesterday. Then, ran it at the track, smoothed out nicely and the fluid level has stayed steady.
Still getting used to the feel of the quick ratio box, but it would appear it is going to be fine.
