4L60E (ready to scrap my car)
I posted this on LS1tech but figured I may as well try here too.
If I stick my finger in the end of the tailhousing I can't even touch the output shaft. I am using a 3rd gen aluminum driveshaft.
Ok here is my predicament. I am swapping an LS1 and 4L60E into my '91 Trans Am (originally a 305 / 700R4) I bought the engine locally and the trans from a classifieds ad online nearby. The 4L60E was not from an fbody, it looks like a GMPP trans. It was basically brand new never used. Came in the crate. Anyways, I swapped an LS1 fbody tail housing on already, and put the trans in the car, got the swap pretty much all buttoned up. Anyways I am putting the driveshaft in and realize that it isn't even touching the output shaft on the trans it is so short. (The output shaft) Why I didn't realize this earlier I have no clue and it's my own fault.
But I want to know if the GMPP tranny's came with a different output shaft from the fbody unit?
If so can I swap it in the car?
I've been working on this car for months and really can't backtrack anymore. I am ready to just scrap the car and buy an LS1 fbody instead of a 3rd gen. Which would be thousands lost lol.

There are several valvebody and internal differences between the 4L60E's over the years but externally they are basically the same length as far as I know. But i've only ever really looked at F and B body 4l60e transmissions.

Re: 4L60E (ready to scrap my car)
did you two swap the tailhousing to an f-body housing? what the OP is saying he swapped the tailhousing to an f-body one and it sounds like the output shaft is different.

You sure its not a 4WD 4L60E? Tailshafts are different lengths for 2WD and 4WD

Yeah I swapped to an fbody tailhousing. I have no clue if it was a 4x4 trans, I didn't assume so because it is a GMPP trans and came with one of those orange plastic 2WD style tailhousing's on it. From the end of the output shaft to the edge of the fbody tail housing is about 4.5".

I think so too judging by the pic posted on tech.

I know this is gonna require me to remove the tranny and tear it apart, which depresses me, but is it as simple as buying the proper output shaft, or do you think there will be other components required to swap it as well?

That was my original intent, but it seems like fbodies don't exist here.

If you know your way around the insides of auto trannys, swapping out the output shaft would be a reasonable option for an otherwise "new" transmission. But, all of the guts will have to come out, as the output shaft is the first thing that goes in the case (which you would know if you know your way around the insides of auto trannys).

Re: 4L60E (ready to scrap my car)
Don't give up on it just yet. Your so close. It sounds like the quickest fix would be to find another 4L60E from and f-body or b-body. Maybe check craigslist or local classifieds. You could sell the tranny you have now (you said it was new, right?) and cover the cost of another tranny. Good luck and keep the faith, your almost there.

Why not get a quote from a tranny shop for how much they'd charge to swap output shafts? It may be worthwhile.

Re: 4L60E (ready to scrap my car)
Yeah I may try that, I am so close to having the car ready to start though and I was just really disappointed to find this out. Putting the driveshaft back in was one of the few things I had left to do. Oh well.

3rd gen cable and bracket, moved one bolt forward from the stock 4L60E position. Its the only way it can reach, and moved up the reach is perfect
