Conversion idea... come inside!!
Ok, I have a 1988 IROC-Z that I want to do the following:
LSx (either 6,7 or built 1) and the 6 speed auto tranny from a CTS-V with paddle shift. I'd like to know if anyone has done this and if so, what kind of issues did you have?

Re: Conversion idea... come inside!!
I'm not aware of anybody installing a 6L90 into a thirdgen yet. There aren't many car versions out there, and those that are tend to be quite expensive. Keep in mind that if you go this route, you're going to need the computer from a 6L90 vehicle too. I doubt that an older ECM that was only tasked with controlling a 4L60 or 4L80 will be capable of controlling the 6L90. Fortunately, there aught to be about a billion 1500 Silverados out there by now with it. I'm not familiar enough with 2WD trucks to be sure, but I'd imagine that a motor/trans from a late model 6.2 1500 Silverado would probably be your most affordable route, but that's going to be just as rare as something from an SS Camaro or CTS-V.

Re: Conversion idea... come inside!!
Interseting concept, wondering if an aftermarket control system is available for that trans? It'll be costly that is for sure....
Re: Conversion idea... come inside!!
Good luck getting a driveshaft for any CTS or 2010+ camaro trans
Itd be easiest to convert a LS1 to gen IV with the newer trans or start with a GEN IV engine. Remember GEN IV uses separate ECM and TCM's, unlike the GEN III that grouped them together in one unit. Also, all GEN IV are DBW, which IMHO is annoying

I haven't used it myself, but TCI Auto has a six speed tranny that you can get paddle shifters or like a sport-tronic type (thats what the description makes it sound like) setup for...
here is the paddle shifter setup: http://www.tciauto.com/tc/6x-six-spe...e-shifter.html
and here is the sport-tronic setup: http://www.tciauto.com/tc/6x-six-spe...m-shifter.html
both setups are capable of 850HP and the best part is they are new and i'm sure they come with some sort of warranty...
yea they are $6k, but it includes transmission with bellhousing, transmission control unit, paddle shifter or 2-button shifter, wiring harness, transmission cooler, dipstick & transmission fluid...and it uses the 4l80 tranny case so you know it'll fit

Re: Conversion idea... come inside!!
the 6l80 is larger than the 80 and the 80 is about as big as you can fit without modification

Re: Conversion idea... come inside!!
I'm thinking that an after market plug n play type tranny install would be the best way to go. I'm not to concerned about the engine at all, thats a small decision will come after I figure out if the '90 setup will go smoothly... Not really concerned about the price for the most part, I'd just like to go over 200 w/ an auto setup and I love the idea of the paddle shifters

And has to be DOT tires. Not many DOT tires rated for 200+ MPH.
There's video of a pretty serious Vette crash there. They tried to use drag radials on all four corners. Not a pretty picture.
