Starting to put a few miles on.
I can't believe how the car has been transformed.
It corners flat and feels agile. Turn in is quick. The harshness over bumps has gone away, even in the back.
For the first time in years, stepping on the brakes brings smiles.
Now for an interior.
Just moved North to New England. AC can wait a few months, I guess.
Interior mostly in. Still waiting on some bits and pieces. Changed to black. Why did I wait so long?
Let me join in recommending a catch can. Here's a so, so pic of mine and a couple of car pics taken up here.

flip she looks amazing you have done aan excellent and tasteful job . i love the yellow this is the first time for me to go through the thread. 6 spped makes nice and nimble to eh? put a few smles on ! how are u liking cam choice ? i was gonna do a torquer 2 but wound up selling i wanted to try her out stock first . any great build!! long live third gens!!
Hey Mike-
Thanks.
Mid 90s BMW yellow.
Have to post some pics of new BLACK interior. Still waiting on a couple of bits, so I can put it all in.
Cam choice is working out. Just figured my use was going to be driving on the road, not going to the track. Got to test the theory on Connecticut back roads today and 3rd gear passes are instant. Reminds of my crotch rocket days, that quick.
1st measure has ok fuel mileage... 18 3/4 mpg in stop and go and back road tooling around. Pulls 5th happily at 40+ mph on our up and down back roads.
My big worry was the 1.8 roller rockers on top of a quick opening grind would slap the valves around. but valves are quiet. Guess the tame grind let me get away with it. I don't recommend it, but I'm breathing easier.
Engine was sucking oil without catch can. Now it runs clean, and much better.
The wheels, brakes, and everything else are icing on the cake. Think I'll have a great all around car...
Build is looking great! Thanks for the link to it. Nice to see others putting some time and money into their 3rd gens too. And this is the first time I have ever seen the batwing pan used. Looks like it fits pretty good with the BMR k member, which is the one I have. I'll have to keep that in mind!
Incredible. It has been over a year since I put anything up.
What a joy this car is. Mild Crane cam is perfect for my driving on the back roads around here. When there is no snow, or SALT, this is my ride of choice- a clear weather DD.
Gradually taking the rough edges off. 10,500+ miles now.
Viking (double adjustable) shocks on the rear, now- NICE.
Originally, there was a brown interior. Black now. Steering wheel shows some traces. Wheel is stock with 2 (two!) leather covers on it. First one eventually wore out. On the spot decided to leave it on, and put the new one over. Result worked out. Good feel and size to it. Posting some (just ok) pics of interior here. Wires under radio have been disappeared now, BTW.
19 months since I last posted. After all those days of little else on my mind. Now, I just go to the garage, and turn the key. An every day part of my life, this working, fun to drive car. They are rare enough, now, I think lots of folks have no idea of what they are looking at.
I have almost 15K miles on the swap now. Drive it a lot when there is no snow or salt. A/C is still a "future" project. Not so critical in New England.
Put on Alston sub frame connectors last year. Do it, even if you already have some kind of perimeter connectors already on. Will really stiffen your car up, that's good.
Alstons made my 80s Herb Adams rear sway bar WAY too beefy. Scary oversteer was never far away- as Dean (aka "Slick Track God") says more SFC, less rear sway. So I put on a hollow BMR rear bar and upped the rate of my coil over springs. A side effect was raising the car slightly- good for the sometimes flaky roads around here.
Car is now STIFF, but handles as well as it ever has.
Other thing I did over the Winter was have my throttle body ported. Again, DO IT! I expected, maybe a little improvement. I got a much smoother and freer running engine. A big improvement. Porting the LS-6 intake manifold is next!
Take heart, all in mid swap, when you get on the road life is sweet.
