2000 z28 swap into 92 Z28, any suggestions
Hi all, I have a 1992 z28 and a 2000 z28. They are both automatic cars. I wish to swap the drivetrain out of the new and into the old. Since i have both complete cars, i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. The 4th gen has SLP headers and exhaust, but i read that the headers will not work on the swap. I believe i can use the exhaust on the 92 with some mods. I also read that some people use the entire fuel tank and lines from the 4th gen. Any advice is appreciated and thank you in advance.

The tank swap isn't a bad idea. Electrical connectors don't match, but since you have both cars, that shouldn't be an issue.
Are you keeping AC? You'll need to notch the K-member if you do (unless you get a tubular K-member).
Only 4th gen shorty headers will fit a 3rd gen. If yours are long tubes, you'll need to do something else.
I have Hawks 1-3/4" primary, 2-1/2" collector long tubes, with a custom Y-pipe, to a 3rd gen 3" cat-back with Magnaflow single in/out 3" muffler. It was good enough for the car to run 11.95 @ 114 MPH last weekend.
You'll need front engine swap mounts and a swap transmission crossmember. Both available from Hawks.

Re: 2000 z28 swap into 92 Z28, any suggestions
thanks for the reply. yea i want to keep ac, and hopefully cruise control too. I probably will do the k member modification to my car. The headers on my 2000 are long tubes, so i guess i will try to sell them. Do you have any clearance issues with the Hawks headers ? I have read a few guys complaining about that. I plan to get the mounts for trans and motor from hawks. I figure if i use their headers, i better use their mounts. I also heard people complain about their y-pipe, is that why yours is custom ? Thats a pretty nice ET you ran, is your motor pretty much stock ?

haha no doubt. Most of the neighbors are car guys though so an ls1 with open headers and a lopey cam is ok with them. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the swap. I just got mine running about a month ago actually. You will defintely enjoy the power!

thanks man, much appreciated ! I'm sure i will have questions, always going to run into some unknowns from time to time. Yea as far as the power, i did drive the 2000 z that i am going to use, and it is quite the difference from the 92. My cousin lives down the road from me, and he thinks i am nuts for taking a perfectly good car and using it for parts to put on the older one. I just think the 2000 is butt ugly though, and i always loved the 91 and 92 z28's. Plus i am sure i could sell alot of left over parts from the 4th gen when i am done with it.
