Just bought a 91 RS and a LS1

So I have a project. Just got a 91 RS roller three days ago, and got a LS1 and T56 yesterday. Gonna try to post pics as I go and will be asking for lots of help along the way. Its my first time putting a motor in a car so we'll see how it goes. Been doing lots of reading to find out what I'm up against. Biggest worry right now is the wiring. I pm'd pocket and he said he is no longer making harnesses. Do any of you have any other suggestions as far as wiring goes? I know hawks makes one and some other companies do as well, just trying to not spend $800-$1000 for a harness. Here's a link to my photobucket for some of the pics of the car and the motor.

I was told the motor was from a 2002 TA but the heads have 853 casting numbers on them. Any way to tell what year its from? Said to have 75k on it. So far money spent to date
Car - $600
LS1 w/T56 - $1800

looks like a good project. I had my dad do my harness, wish I had spent more time with him on that part of the swap. I seem to remember someone else doing harnesses on here, but can't remember the s/n.

From a quick google search, looks like those heads were on most 97+ ls1 passenger car engines. They'll be fine for now, but look elsewhere (ie save your $ for other heads) for power.

I think 01-02 ls1s had 241 casting heads. If it has EGR, its a 98-00 motor, no EGR should be 01-02. 1800 is a steal for a ls1 6speed combo! If you were local, I wouldn't mind helping on the harness if pocket is no longer doing them. Read his threads and jump in, it will make sense with the specific 90-92 info he has as far as diagrams and pinouts. Pocket and a handful others will be able to help you when you get stumped on wiring. I am by no means a harness expert, but I got mine to work so I feel I could help you along if needed along with the others. Looks like you have a clean car to start your project with. Keep us updated, build threads are fun to watch!

Re: Just bought a 91 RS and a LS1

So was looking for pedals today and am finding different responses to which set is better, third gen or fourth gen. I've read the pick up on the third gen is high, but that I will have to modify the fourth gen pedals to fit. Any recommendations? Also as far as the clutch slave assembly can I use one from a v6 fourth gen or are they t56 specific? Finally as far as the lower shifter boots go, should I be looking for third gen or fourth gen parts?

853 heads were available from 99-00 on 5.7l. if the engine is from an 02 it would have 241 heads. also look at the intake for an EGR provision directly behind the throttle body on top of the intake.

Re: Just bought a 91 RS and a LS1

For pedals, I have used third and fourth gen. Thirdgen pedals need to be modified a bit for 4th gen hydraulics, and fourthgen pedals need a little modding to fit a thirdgen, no way around it. Thirdgen pedal, atleast for me with a lt1 style 6speed had very high engagement, was really touchy and grabby and didn't much care for it. May be different with ls1 stuff, I don't know. Personally I would just use fourthgen pedals for t56swap. The slave cylinder is specific to a ls1 t56, your 6 cylinder stuff will not work. Ls1 is a internal slave where as your thirdgen stuff has a external slave. Most use 6speed lower shift boot, thirdgens have a much larger hole for the shifter to pass through. Use a 6speed lower boot to seal well on the shifter, and use sealer on the lower boot to the trans tunnel to fill minor gaps you'll likely have.

Re: Just bought a 91 RS and a LS1

That helps quite a bit, gives me some stuff to start getting. How about trans crossmember? I have seen people saying the sphoon that hawks carries makes running the exhaust difficult. I will be keeping the stock ls1 manifolds for quite a while and having a local shop fab it to my existing 3in piping going back. Looked at the bmr piece also, but I have to use a different torque arm. Will be keeping most of the suspension stock for now. This is being done a tight budget, so suspension upgrades will have to wait for future funds.
