LT1 timing marks

In process of installing 96 LT1 motor in 88 Trans Am. Motor had been converted to Edelbrock thunder carb and msd dist and box, and installed in 90 Camaro. Verified motor ran fine before removal. didn't think about external tdc mark somewhere before installation in 88. Nothing has been moved, assume motor will still run as before, but...I assume at some point it would be wise to check timing. New to msd, and this appears to be an older box, but does msd handle this? Have followed previous swap posts, but mine seems to be a little bit like everyone's, but no one in particlular.

Thanks for any help
Buck

Re: LT1 timing marks

It does not have a timing mark as the balancer is not keyed to the crank.

I would suggest getting a piston stop & finding TDC so you know where it is.

Re: LT1 timing marks

if it has angle plug heads don't forget to remove the exh rocker on cyl 1. You WILL bend the valve if you do not and wrestlke the crank past the interference.

LT1 cranks do have a keyway, JEGS offers a reasonably priced keyed damper/hub combo (ATI is really expensive) and it's indexed also. Might be a worthwhile upgrade.

Re: LT1 timing marks

thanks to both. finally found that in another post. Will use piston stop, (couldn't get dial indicator with angle plug and headers installed. sure wish I thought about this with the engine on the stand.........just decided from beginning to leave the opti spark alone, with distributor already installed.
New to posting, but read all the posts on LT1 to gen 3 I could.
thanks again
