5.3 4l60e bare bones (broke guy) crossmember question
I've searched and come up with nothing on the forums which seems odd (used 4l60 crossmember and variants of both items as search terms) so I'm hoping you can help. two questions:
1. Is the factory crossmember able to be easily modified to hold the 4l60e or is the only option an aftermarket cross member.
2. does the tail of my 700r4 fit the 4l60 so my arm bolts up or is there a provision in the existing tail to allow me to bolt it up?
thanks in advance!

Re: 5.3 4l60e bare bones (broke guy) crossmember question
As far as making your stock crossmember work is basically a question for yourself and fabbing skills. When I did mine I no longer had access to a welder or the free metal. For the price it wasn't really all that bad in my opinion. As far as a tailshaft. I just found one off of a camaro and moved on. I didn't have a 700r4 to try the tailshaft but I'd imagine that's a no.

If you modify the crossmember, make the new transmission output shaft sit at the same height the old one did.
I am guessing you have a later 4L60E with 6 bolt extension housing. Your third gen extension housing won't bolt to it. Earlier 4L60E models had a 4 bolt flange.
