I searched but didn't find results here, has anyone checked clearance on shaved truck intakes? Is it much better what kind of hood would be required to make it work?
If you have a cowl hood they should fit. The TBSS and or newer 2007+ 5.3 intakes are really decent for what you get. They claim they make more power, and fatter, than a stock LS6 intake. They are dirt cheap and although ugly, can be "prettied" up a bit like the one in the photo. If you are looking for a cost effective OEM style intake I would look at the Dorman LS2 reproduction. Its better than the stock LS2 but also has the four bolt TB flange to accommodate larger throttle bodies if your combo requires it.
Truck intake will make gobs more power under the curve compared to the LS6. truck intakes area always better as they dont have hood lines to restrict them. I think the LS6 only made more power over the OLD truck intake (above pic shaved in this thread) which wasn't as good as the newer NNBS intakes AKA trailblazer SS intake which outperformed all factory intakes. All power increases over the OLD truck intake was above 5kish and it was minimal. The NNBS style will outperform the LS6 at all RPMS (due to larger plenum and 90mm TB opening). Expect more tq below 4k like 20+ftlbs with the truck intake.
BTW my stock OLDER truck intake cost $80 brand new on ebay, and it fit under my stock 87 Formula 350 power bulge hood. I actually just ordered the new NNBS intake for $89 shipped and a $22 4bolt to 3bolt TB adapter. That will be going on over the winter for alittle more power. I am also boosting my cammed and ported 5.3 to 11psi and these truck intakes are very strong.
Also commenting on the dormans, Dorman LS2 and the truck version are modified factory options. Dorman purchased the FAST lower base molds and uses them in the intakes. This means the bottom end of the dorman intakes are essentially "fast" intakes. They put obstructions in the runners to "detune" them and set them apart from the more expensive FAST intakes. I have the dorman truck intake and ported it and shaved it... looks like a new hemi intake and baddass. I'm reluctent to run it only due to it being a 2 peice intake and worried about leaks with boost.
So if you can't fit the truck NNBS intake, then go LS6 or dorman LS2 if you want to save some cash. Anyone with an LS6 intake wants $400+.

Unshaved same truck intake. Clears my stock power bulge hood.
Shaving them is ALOT or work... ALOT of pluggin as you will runinto the plenum area when you remove the bosses. So plastic welding and other stock bonding agents will be required.
Hotrod I believe did a comparison of the LS1, LS6, truck, TBSS, LS3, FAST 102 etc. I'd have to go look at the article again. I found it originally over on LS1tech.com.
HP ratings went LS1, Truck, LS6, TBSS, LS3.
The difference in power was more torque on the truck, more hp on the LS6, then more HP and TQ on the TBSS (about 15 respectively) per jump (l -15tq on LS6 vs truck).
Primary benefit of the LS6 is it's low profile. Yes it has more HP but does give up some tq to the truck intakes. All depends on your application and what you need. I personally went with LS6 because the truck and TBSS won't fit under my Firebird Hood.
