Off the shelf cold air intakes?

Thought it could be worth its own thread.

My previous LS swap I had my air filter located where most of us do, on the battery box for the drivers side but with no box. This time I'd like something that didnt just pull in hot air from the engine. Are there any cold air intakes on the market that people have tried which are close enough to make work with a little fab? I thought I remember one time reading that 04-06 GTO CAIs were close, but I dont know for sure.

If not I guess I'm fabbing up a box...

Thanks
Chuck

Re: Off the shelf cold air intakes?

What i plan on doing is cutting a hole in the drivers side battery tray and mounting the airfilter down below.. add a watersock to the filter and you have a true cold air intake.

FWIW, this is what I did. Pulls air from the fender...

It's pretty easy to make... just 2 45's & 1 90-degree elbow & a straight section of pipe.
Put the stock style MAF in the pipe where convenient with 2 more couplers or if you are into tuning, a 4" system with the cartridge type MAF as shown.
Drill a hole through the battery box & mount the filter underneath it.

Re: Off the shelf cold air intakes?

Engines with higher air flow needs.... firebirdo88 was in the 9's and found it ran best with air filter on battery tray sucking engine bay air, rather than being sealed to the fender.

If I had fab skills, I would tilt the radiator and go over the top with a C6 Vararam or something like that.

Re: Off the shelf cold air intakes?

If only you had a friend who already did this after exploring many options.

FWIW, high HP cars need massive filters. I picked up 15rwhp by tripling my filter size.

Re: Off the shelf cold air intakes?

Chuck, your car is too fancy & pretty. You're going to have to make one to have something to your satisfaction.

The other problem is you basically have the same engine as me but with an even larger cam that will make more power..... I needed a 5" intake.... You're going to need a 5" intake too. You can see my 5" intake in post # 1305, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...ml#post6330021

My intake probably is not pretty enough, but it will give you ideas. There is a size transition between tube and throttle body. Make that transition length as long (gentle) as possible to improve air flow in that region. My size transition serves double duty as the 90° turn out of the throttle body. That reduces the number of joints and couplers needed (notice I have just 1 coupler and 1 hard pipe).

In an ideal world I would have a 4" bend at the throttle body and a bell shape out to large box with a panel filter. But I'm not capable of building stuff like that.

Cone filters in particular get massive because the surface is not perpendicular to the flow path. My cone filter fills the whole battery tray (calculations are in the post I gave earlier).

Panel filter flows more for the same surface area if you can figure out how to package it.

Re: Off the shelf cold air intakes?

QWK what you have is basically what I had on the LS6 it just went the other direction. Still had the massive cone.

Unfortunately I cant run my air filter under the drivers side battery box because that is where I have my power steering cooler mounted. I may just end up trying to get something built like the the shield DSE car.

Re: Off the shelf cold air intakes?

On a Camaro with a jongbloed hood C6 filter will fit without laying back the radiator

That's really cool. Do you have a build thread anywhere?

Re: Off the shelf cold air intakes?

I made a shield from 18 gauge (i think) sheet metal. Tubing, clamps and elbow from silicone intakes. Cut/welded the tubing, 4" all the way.

That filter was replaced with a K&N later on.
