My '85 IROC Race Car
Here's my '85 IROC that I started tearing down last summer. I finally have gotten to start putting things back together! Since the car is in my side yard, the suspension is going in first.
Here is a list of what's going under the car:
Suspension:

KYB AGX shocks and struts
BMR adj. panhard bar
BMR adj. LCAs
(following is from Spohn)
-'97 T-56 retrofit crossmember and torque arm
-solid chrome moly front and rear sway bars and rear sway bar mounting kit
- LCA relocation brackets
-all new hardened bolts for all the suspension
Brakes:
2004 Corvette calipers and performance rotors
front and rear C5 brake brackets (many thanks to Ed Miller!)
Custom front hubs modified for floating rotors
2" spacers front and rear
Wheels:
2001 Camaro SS rims

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
Time for the funny story. Because the car is currently just the unibody it weighs next to nothing. Now, in order to install the new springs (which are about 800 pound springs) I needed to weigh down the so i could compress the springs far enough to bolt in the drivers side front suspension assembly. So what did I use to weigh the car down? (and no...I'm NOT a *******) about a thousand pounds of concrete bags! It was quite the sight! But hey, thats what doing it all yourself (with the great help of my dad) is all about.

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
Here's a pic of my dad's beautiful '87 IROC (foreground) next to my '85 IROC a few years ago. Sadly someone jumped a curb with it, busted two rims and the front bumper and spoiler and then about a month ago someone side swiped it right behind the left rear wheel right in front of my house!
but i still love that car.
Tell me what you guys think of the cars

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
yeah I love the car. The first two pics are what it looked like when we got it back. and the last one is what it looks like now. its going to cost $1600 just for the front to be replaced and painted. thankfully there was no mechanical damage to the car, actually the gas tank cracked but thats what welding is for. lolDoes anyone by chance have a front bumper and/or ground fx for sale? the front bumper is 500 bucks alone
thanks in advance!

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
couple of updates on the twins lol; first on my dads '87, i found a guy that will repair the whole front end, repaint the chips on the hood, and fix the swipe behind the rear wheel all for $1300! and at first i thought this guy wasnt for real, but it turns out hes done many show cars for hot august nights and stuff. and he can patch up the bumper/gfx so i dont have to buy new ones!
now for the race car! saturday night my dad and i put in the right side of the front suspension and brakes. last night i put the rear spohn sway bar onto the axle. today i crawled under the front and installed the front spohn sway bar
tonight after my dad gets home we are going to install the rear axle and then i get to roll it back into the garage
so tomorrow i should have pictures of the rear suspension install and hopefully have the car back in the garage by wednesday

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
thanks bro. what does your '86 look like?
monday night my dad and i finished the rear suspension at about 10pm and i finally got the car back into the garage last night! my car is finally coming together (after about a year). now its time to finish the brake system and tackle installing forth gen pedals. any advice about how to approach that is much needed and appreciated. and if anyone knows what all i need exactly that would be a great help. so far i have the forth gen pedals and the '97 T56 and thats it. my car was originally an auto.
thanks guys!

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
Okay update time! a lot has changed for the better and kinda for worse. First off, I sadly decided to stop working on the '85 because i was running into so many costly problems and i didnt really want to still be working on it five years from now! and the fact the only places i could drive it are at least two hours away...so my dad has aloud me to take all the suspension and brake parts and put them on the street car the i drive everyday. the only bad part about this whole thing is no lt1 and t56...for now ;] his big problem is gas milage. so maybe an LS1 or something is in order.
So onto the '87! two weekends ago i had my mechanic deal with the front setup. and that saturday i did the rear myself with the help of my dad. all i can say is it looks a million times better, and it handles like a dream! and with just the front 'vette brakes installed right now, the stopping power is just crazy! so check out the pics! (more on the way)
Near future upgrades will be installing my MOMO Trek steering wheel, a Sparco seat or two, a six point roll bar (from the eight point kit i already bought for the '85 lol), the Spohn torque arm and crossmember (im going to need to have the car in the garage to put that in, instead of the sloped driveway)

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
well because the last owner let the registration run out without filing a non operating permit, i cant drive it on the street without having to make everything stock...so i either get to keep the shell or scrap it. so im probably going to scrap it :/

yeah companies who want logos or concept drawing done. ive also designed and painted whole sets for plays, some landscape design, and furniture design and building. if you can do it well, it pays quite well. i also tutor art lol all at seventeen hahaha
and yes thats true about selling it. i just never had much time to think about what to do exactly

I spent $200 plus shipping from Tirerack. They give the car an amazing look! And with everything else Ive done so far, the car handles like its on rails.

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
yes they do by about an inch to an inch and a half on mine. the eibach pro kit gives the car a more streetable ride and dont lower the car as much but still much firmer than stock. the sportlines that i have are more of a race spring, their kidney killers with my shocks turned up.

That roc looks great man. I usually dont care for 10 spoke wheels but you pulled off the look very nicley! Especially with those vette brakes behind them. Also, not a big fan of aftermarket steering wheels, but i am pretty conservative.

just for knowledge the sportlines can be bought from drivewire.com a place located in cali for $219 and its free shipping, dont know if the extra 19 is cheaper than the shipping from tire rack but just for info... and did you ever find out how the kyb agx's rode i was going to buy those but was steered away from other members and told to just shell out extra $$ and get koni's but had to stall my suspension plans.

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
i think tire rack was 200 flat but because the sportlines were nationally back ordered and i was getting tired of waiting i paid like 50 in shipping. and no i never found out how the KYBs rode because the '87 has tokicos on it. which work wonderfully. i only bought the KYBs for the track car because i got them really cheap from my uncle.

well the KYBs are more of a throw away part, thats how i bought them for my track car. if its all you can afford im sure they arent THAT bad.
and i went on ebay and searched on "camaro momo hub" and it came right up. make sure to get one that says "Camaro: all years"
heres the link of the one i bought: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting
hope this helps!

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
ok so the car looks hella cool...and one would assume it really handles. well today i proved just how well it handles...just think C5 Z06, and then think of something that is about twice as tight in the corners...and you have the '87.
im really not sure how i managed to pull this off but i spent the whole day at Thunderhill in Willows CA (for those of you who dont know what the track is its a three mile long butt kicking road course) and i out handled the following: 2 C5 Z06s; 3 turbo'd BMW e36 M3s; a Porsche 911 GT2 and Cayman; a Lotus Elise, and a few other cars that should've been a lot faster than me. in every corner that was tighter then a slight sweeper i would loose them completely. they only caught me on the straight aways because i only have about 240hp and well the GT2 was dyno'd at 750hp hahaha (this was my first time driving the car like that and on a track like that).
lets just say that the guys with the vettes and porsches were just a lil embarrassed.
this just goes to show what about $3500 in brake and suspension upgrades and some extreme driving skills will do for a third gen!!!
so check out the pics!!!

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
update time! over the three day weekend, i put in a four point roll bar and im still able to use the rear seats with plenty of headroom! i have it wrapped in blue pads with the offset hole.
tonight i put in my Corbeau A4's i ordered last week. their black and grey microsuede and blue 4 point harnesses. no more almost sliding out of the window in high g turns!
ive also been tearing down my LT1 that im going to swap in at the local high school in a ROP class; all i have left to take out of the block is the cam, crankshaft after i pull the harmonic balancer.
check out the pics and tell me what you think! ill post more tomorrow of the seats and everything, it was dark when i finished tonight

Wow your iroc looks great! Those are very nice seats, i like the shape and color. Also happy to see what the suspension/brake upgrades can do to a 3rd gen. I live in Montreal and i do have access to a track every day for free!! (Piste Gille Villeneuve). I was also very impressed with the handling of my Iroc. Here are some pics of the track! (some with my old Trans am)

those harnesses will collapse your spine if you get into a bad accident. You really need to add the cross bar and mount the shoulder harness there or swap back to stock seatbelts.

Re: My '85 IROC Race Car
mr. camaro- i must say im jealous! how did you manage to get free access to the track? your IROC looks great! with the right upgrades, third gens can out handle just about anything. i love how my car is worth what a brake job costs on some cars and can loose them in the corner!
xpndbl3-thanks for the heads up; ive been working on that part. the bigger problem is that my dad wont let me render the back seats useless...so i have to come up with something. is the angle of the strap going down too steep? or is it because it going down and to the side?
