Re: Project Rustbucket.
Thanks for the info! I plan to clean it and put it to use as soon as I can decide on color. Right now Artic white is what I am going with but knowing me, I will probably change my mind again.
I plan to sell some extra things I have to bring in some $ for paint. I got the money from the rear window louvers a few days ago, and have 2 pairs of hood louvers and an extra pair of 91-92 Blisters and maybe a extra front spoiler. So far I have customers for everything besides the front spoiler which I am fixing this weekend to sell. It was the original one my Cam had and was banged up but should be an easy fix and I was planning to fix it but found a better condition one at a local yard and got it for $5. I laugh in the face of people who want $100+ for one.

Anyways, some teaser pictures before shes out this weekend. She is currently in a coat of sealer. Theres about 4 spots that are bothering me right now, most will you never notice unless you look very close and feel the surface or if I tell you. I told 6 people to find any bad spots and no one found anything.

It's getting there!
And if you're gonna do white... did you consider the Cadillac Pearl White? I saw a member's GTA painted that color and it looked luscious.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
I did, a neighbor actually told/showed me the color and I like it, but I just love the look of a clean artic white. Right now though I plan to keep it sealed and work on it a bit. I did not update the thread, but I picked up a T5 with everything but the pedals which I still have not decided if I want to use or not. I picked it up a few weeks ago for $150 with core charge and some other goodies. I love my 700r4 though, It shifts nice and has not given me a problem yet. I might keep the T5 around though. At worst I could sell it and make a profit, I think I can easily double my money if I decide against it.
Anyways, right now the Cam is almost road ready. Just gotta basically clean the interior pieces and put it back together. When moving the Cam out, it got a small decent scratch which you can see me fixing in the previous pictures. Once thats done, I will re-prime it and seal it and off she goes.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Yes sir, and 89
. I am surprised the 90 they had that I got my fuel line off was taken off so quick off the yard. Car still had some parts on it. Isnt it a 4 day weekend deal again this week? Its gonna be gone in a matter of days then.
I need a 91-92 to pop up. I am in need of door ground effects. I have one side but the bracket rusted off. There is a 92 at Franks but the ground effects was one of the first things to go. I picked up the chin spoiler though since the guys who picked the rest thought it was unusable from 1 small crack.

Still, I think the only thing I need right now is both door ground effects and maybe a dash.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
I can get ahold of a full gfx of the 85-90 style for around $55. Although I like the 91-92 more though and yes I am not joking on the $. $15 for chin spoiler, $10 per door/rocker gfx combo & $15 for rear bumper and $5 for the rear wheel gfx. Fiberglass things at small local junkyards here are worth squat.
Why you ask?

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Well got the exterior done and most of the interior besides rear seats and plastic where the gfx rocker hole is on the rear. Other than that and inner fender liners and front gfx spoiler, I took it out and drove if for the first time in over 4 months.
Wow.
Besides some late throttle response when you let it coast for a second and step on it suddenly, It was perfect. Running without mufflers made the experience much better. I brought a friend along and you can tell he enjoyed the ride. Also, 180 stat is perfect. With fans on, it would be around 170-180 and with it them off, it wont go past 210. Perfect in my book but the car feels way better at 170-180. Now I just need to get the radiator fan switch installed and not have to mess with the A/C controls to get the fans running.
Still, The whole drive, I couldn't resist to smile.
I did not step on it too much since well I have a near bald passenger rear tire and no insurance.
God I love my Cam too much, is that bad?

Picked up a decent condition dash pad! My father went to a small yard we always visit and called me saying there was a older Camaro with a good dash. I told him if its not cracked to buy it and I will pay him here. Its perfect! Its a bit discolored from what I am guessing sun damage causes but with some tlc it is perfect. Price, well that will always be 1/10th of what people ask for a good one. I love Junkyards, don't you?
I will get it installed later on today. I also found out I need to replace my TPS again. Good thing I saved my receipt.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
So I has a question, where does this damm thing go? Its scrapped to hell and I know It goes on the front bottom end but no idea where. Any help with this?

Anyways, as far as the Cam goes, Its road ready and has been but I don't want to start taking it out and doing Daily Driver things with it. I said to myself my cam won't be no garage queen but god damm its so hard not to and thinking of **** stupid people will do to it in parking lots and in general, it makes me just say eh, only weekends. We will see though, right now she is still in sealer. Whats left is small things like getting the inner fenders back on and front bumper ground effects but with both rocker ground effects on, the front is the only way to jack up the car and I am still working on here and might re-do the whole exhaust soon, As far as body work, she is still not done. I am going to go hunting for a new front bumper cover with headlight bar this weekend, The aftermarket one the previous owner purchased is horrible quality and has its mounting points broken in the middle so there is a big gap between the hood and bumper itself. Anyways enjoy the pictures and video, my phones crappy mic sucks I know.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

the side thats showing in the pic faces the ground and mounts to the front Gfx. looks like your metal tabs broke off on you. there should be holes runnin along the GFX(unless this is one you got from the yard. Not all years had it). the holes in the gfx is where you would rivet in those metal tabs(broken one showen in pic).
The other side bolts up to the body or bumper(one of those, what ever it reaches from the front gfx) and there should be another wind diverter where it bolts up to(unless like i said before your year did not have them. Then i would not sure if the bolt holes would be there or not.)
I just got a 85 nose and it did not have this wind diverter on it. I took the wind diverter off of my nose and now have to drill some holes and rerivet it in place.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Thanks chrome! I will see about inventing a way to get it on after I get the front end ready to go back on. As for updates, I decided to take off the front end and fix the fender small dings it had that bothered me. Also time to fix the front ground effects.

I just love how I can dismantle most of the car in a few hours and same time frame to put everything back together.

Hey chrome they got a 92 over by the PicknPull on Hammond.
http://www.picknpull.com/locations.a...w=Detail&ID=66
I am really money tight at the moment so even going over there will probably end up with me spending on cash I need for other things. I got almost everything I need now besides the ground effects that go on the door. The yards here have 2 91-92s but the bracket on both are too far gone and the studs are all rusted out. I have a similar passenger/driver one and the only thing I can think of is double siding it but I would feel better if I had a pair with useable brackets but at the $ rate people want for these, I might use the ones I have and wait til better one pop up at yards. The LQK yard over by blue island has a guy I know that works on Saturdays, and he would charge me $15 for both as ''Misc Accessories'' while online the lowest I see a pair going for is $75.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Waiting for Autozone to open to pick up some sanding paper and get back to work. I am currently gonna fix the front chin spoiler. I do have another one but I will try my handy work with this one and if it works, I can make some money with the spare one since its flawless. I got the spare for $30 and I am sure I can get $90 for it easily and make some money or even better, find a dash trade.
As for what I have done lately, I got the interior or most of it back, still some small missing pieces. I have to find probably online since I doubt I will find Beige Sun visors, I might go to a yard and just grab the brackets for now. I also need a good condition head lamp, passenger rear speaker grill, and passenger top door trim. Basically what I need is to finish it and be happy is:
Interior:
Both Sun Visors
Headliner Headlamp
Passenger Door top trim.
Passenger side rear speaker grill.
Passenger side opener slider.
Exterior:
Both Door bottom graphics (I have a good pair but back mounting bracket is gone)
Passenger side Glass T-top (I have a driver Glass replacement and Plastic is original)
Get matching locks for T-tops.
Thats pretty much it. All small things. As for what I plan to add, well thats the big list but thats after I get situated again and probably work for another year and save up some more.
Find a 10 bolt disk rear with good gears (3.23+) or with luck a 9 Bolt.
Upgrade front brakes to a Ls1 setup or better.
LS/6 Speed Swap
etc
I really want to make this car something to be proud of, granted its gonna get some performance upgrades before visuals, thats fine with me. It will get done in due time and when its done, its one of those things I will hopefully have to show to my future kids and show/teach them. I learned most of my body work by myself and most of my mechanical from my father. Granted I can probably only fully trust worthy work on my Cam, but I am happy with that.
I should have alot more updates soon, who knows it might get color soon, I have been eye balling this.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Thanks, This Camaro was abused alot but thankfully nothing big was done from the rust it had. Trust me if it was huge, I would of just half-assed my work and gotten it painted a long time ago and make it my DD and I would of bought another for my project 3rd gen.
A good challenge is always good. I would of love to have done some big weld work and learn. Granted I walked away with some body work skills but nothing serious. Good luck with the project KRZ and just be patient.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Well I decided to stop being lazy and attempt to fix my front chin ground effect. I previously put some JB weld 1:1 mixture on it to fill some gaps that might be missing and went ahead to fiberglass it and see if it works. I ran out of hardener so its still not gonna be done, I think I missed a small hole that was used as the front mounting spot for the front plate. I will get it after I see if its worth my time to do this. I used this method to fill in some small holes on the hatch lid and it worked out perfect.
First pictures are showing after it has been sanded.

Coated and ready to dry.

Yea its gonna be a bitch to sand, but if its doable, it will earn me a good amount of $ to buy a rear end. I have a few rear ends I can pickup for $95. One is unknown and I have to pull the cover but its a rear from a T/A and a few rear ends from V6's which are drum.
It dries in 3-4 hours, So I plan to have it sanded and either ready for another coat or sanded and in filler for small imperfections and ready for primer/sealer tomorrow. The nose is also getting some TLC.

After about 12 hours total work. Thats the final result. I still have to sand the right corner a bit more since a small bump can still be felt and seen. Still pretty good and has saved me some $. I will have better pictures and it mounted tomorrow.

Hey man, looking great! Get ahold of me (815-219-3353) I have an extra set of front fenders that are dent free, a good pass door, front and rear bumpers, and a drivers side lower ground effect (91-92 style) If you are willing to make the drive, I can help you with the bodywork too.

I got my front fenders to almost perfect. I got the front fender straight enough with a heat gun and fiberglassed the back of it to put some more strenght and not having it sag. I am interested in a headlight bar if you have one that has good studs and lower door ground effects for 91-92. How much for each and the pair of ground effects?
Also, who has two thumbs and can fix a torn to crap front chin spoiler? This guy.

Both the front bumper and chin got a coat of filler primer and sanding to come after an hour.

I am very pleased with the front chin spoiler. I was afraid that stretching or bending would crack the fiberglass repair and well I said screw it and unbolted it from the nose and played around with it while sanding it and all good.
Probably gonna be mounted and sealed by tonight. Cant wait.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
So front is on. Very very pleased. Looks amazing.

It struck in that moment how far I have come. Right now its just sanding my fender work and sealing it. While that happends, I am gonna use paint thinner to clean my t-tops since they got a bit of paint on them as well as the rear window from tape loosing its grip. Right now its just getting the chin to secure onto the fender to reduce gaps on the side which I already have a solution for.
Anyways, feels great sitting back and people admiring your work. My neighbor saw how beat to crap my front chin was and was amazed at my work. It had over 6 rips. 2 on the passenger side, middle had 3 and one on driver, all fixed with fiberglass and its flexible and can take a beating which was what I was afraid of, People want $100+ for one? Pfft, I will just go to a yard, find a ripped one and fix it myself. Gotta love that

Thanks, put it together again to make it road worthy. I drove it so hard, brakes are very soft though, might have to look into that next time. Other than that, holy crap does it feel good to drive it. Perfect exhaust tone, perfect handling. Had some fun showing off and doing burnouts near my house and left my peg leg signature in front of my house, thankfully the tire that spinned was the worn to crap one.
Enjoy the pictures, it seriously made my month to drive it with Metallica blasting.

Artic white, I might paint it using a single stage if I decide to do it this year. I plan to do some performance upgrades first though. Would hate to paint it, and then mess up the paint when removing/installing things.

Du sprichts deutsch und englisch? Ausgezeignet! Is that how you spell that? I would hit that car with a deep blue, bright red or a nice black if I was repainting. But when I think about it I would keep the stock paint color for my car.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
No speaky dutch. I actually thought about repainting it back to factory color, even replacing the daytona hood back to stock but a 91-92 z28 version. Its still up in the air, and I have alot of room to decide. Right now though its performance time, and I might actually send the T5 to get rebuilt and maybe swap it in, since it was one of the things that took on the 5ft of water my basement got and it and my seats got submerged. Seats after 4 hours of cleaning were back to normal, transmission, no idea if it would work.
Im gonna call around and see what they will quote me, if all fails, I will see if my friend that attends UTI would take on the task, doubtful though. I still need the pedals and some small things if I decide to go through with this and use the T5.

I have the drivers piece that runs from the fender to the 1/4 panel. The one with the "scoop" in it. I also have a extra set of 4th gen cloth seats once I pick up some race buckets for my 94.

I just need the piece that runs from the bottom of the door. So far the lowest price I have gotten online was $75 from Rcar on here, but thats still alot over what local yards will let em go for.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Well I said screw it and yanked the A/C out. After a debate with my father, it seemed like the good way to go. Our debate was basically about the heat, I said, screw the heat, if the heat from our Jimmy thats all leather inside does not bother me. Why would the cam with T-tops will? The system had an unknown leak, and after looking for where it was (We had a small can of UV refill and used it to check), it was leaking in 3 areas. So that was the last straw and it came out. Wow is the space nice. I ordered the bypass pulley from Summit which was $30 total shipped while Oreilly wants $35+ Tax and Autozone wants $30+ Tax.

Here are some pictures, gonna pick up some Simple green in a few when I pick up my little sister from the babysitter, then its engine cleaning time. The Passenger valve cover makes the bay look really bad. Its sad how one rusty thing can overtake the overall look.

For those wanting to do this, it all depends on you, if you want the space and don't want/need it, then go for it but if you plan to sell or not keep the car around, either leave it or store the parts. I yanked everything off

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Well today, I did a hour and a half drive to a Junkyard in Hammond Indiana since they had 3 91-92's. 1 of each meaning T-top/Convert/Hard and wow. These cars were not even stripped yet, yes the dash was gone on each of em but the rest was perfect. One actually had almost brand new side skirts, but some idiots yanked them to remove the fender.
. The vert driver side door ground effect was actually a pre 91 design, I grabbed the passenger ground effect from it and its good. The yellow had a good passenger ground effect but driver was yanked and chiped/broken and they would not budge on lowering the price.
. There was also alot of good ground effect peices, there was 3 good chin spoilers and countless other things that are being sold for fractions of the price. Gotta love junkyards.
Anyways, Picked up the Passenger side bottom door ground effect and driver side top door panel trim. Got em for $15 each. A fraction of what people want for them online, I am going to a local yard that apparently has 2 new 91's. Hopefully one has a good driver side ground effect. So in the end, I saved a good amount that someone wanted to make as a profit.

Nice work on your camaro!
Are you going to remove the rest of the AC stuff from under the hood, and add a delete box?

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Good posibility I will, Don't S10 boxes fit in our 3rd gens? Ived heard something about that topic, if they do, well I have about 4-7 I can pickup for $25.
I also really want to do a A.I.R delete, You have no idea how much space is gained without it. I am going to pick up some simple green and some grease and wax remover and give her a sweep after I realign the front end on. There is still a decent gap between the bumper and hood, I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact the headlight bar inner studs that bolt near the radiator has anything to do with it. Right now its just being held by one stud in the middle near where the latch is.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Not sure about the S10 boxes, if I remember correctly, they have to be modified. I know how much space is gained through the removal of the A.I.R. system, that was one of the first things I did with my camaro. It makes a huge difference in the engine's appearance. Are you removing the heater, as well?

Wow its really come along, if you delete the heater fan altogether you can just make a plate to fit over the old hole.
What are you doing with that old AC stuff? I need that stuff for one of my cars if you're willing to come off of it.

Thats the thing, I would love to, but I plan to drive it during cold days, just not during salt/snow season. I might spend the money into a direct box though.
As for the A.I.R, All I need now is finding the right belt and bypassing it, which I am doing after its painted.
Man, why didn't you reply earlier, I asked a few friends if they wanted it and no one did not even my father, only thing that is left is the compressor, the rest was thrown away.
. I would of even shipped it to you for free since I have a friend that works at UPS. Thread Starter

Re: Project Rustbucket.
As for updates, Did not do much besides taking off the front and adjusting it. I also test fit my fathers old wheels he had on his 89 Caprice Classic. Their 15's with 295/50/15's and man. I loved the look, I would of lowered it but I worried it might of rubbed. Still looks amazing, I know I am saving the tires since their amazing and probably at 80% rubber left and save em for my Weld stars I plan to get later on. I am really starting to hate the C5 wheels and I do not plan to fix em. I might just get rid of em through Craigs for $150. Anyways some pictures to show what I did today besides spend 6 hours to just buy the things I said earlier.
Yea the style of the rim is nothing special but just the beefyness of the tire makes it look soo good.

Tried to get a side shot. Sorry no rear shot comparing the 245's on the C5s to these 295's lol

Test fitting the bottom trim piece, looks good.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Theres a ton of 3rd gens at yards near me all the sudden, Picked up alot of good things. The main thing and has me still happy is a stock yellow letter radio from a 91. After a good cleaning it looks perfect. I also picked up a good dash pad with no cracks or punctured speaker grills. Here is a quick picture of the radio. The 91 also had 3 out 4 original wheels, all looked good and center caps were in the trunk. I am really thinking of getting them. I know where I can get the 4th which is a front from another yard near here. It will all be under $120 as well with decent enough tires. We will see in the next few days.
Anyways Prices were:
Dash pad: $35
Radio: $15

Re: Project Rustbucket.
Yea I am loving these yards, I have everything I need now, and need nothing else. All parts I bought the past few days were fractions of what people are charging online. So far the total list of parts I have bought for cheap are:
91-92 Hood blisters: $20
90-92 Yellow letter radio: $18
Dash pad: $35
91-92 Door ground effects: $15 & $5 each
Top door panel trim: $15
T5 Transmission: $150
145mph Dash Cluster: $25
Manual Shifter plate with boot: $5
Headliner: $25
Total $313 and that probably 1/10th of what I would of had to pay since thats not even covering probably 60% of a T5 but I might resell it since it was one of the things that got submerged in my basement flood a few weeks ago. Should probably still break even.

You know you can use the same belt if you remove the smog pump. I tried to find a shorter belt at my local autozone, and they were all too short, and wouldnt fit around at all, but the tensioner tensions it enough that you dont need to buy a new one.

Re: Project Rustbucket.
I have really thought about going into this parting out job since I see myself making a good amount of money if I do. I know 3-4 yards here that would 80% agree to contact me when they have a 3rd gen come in and sell it to me for what they charge plus a bit more. I know 2 yards that frequently tell me to just take the car off the yard for $300 and their almost fully intact. Lately alot of 91-92s have been popping up. I might go into that line of work soon, The parts for our cars are getting very expensive. It will even work perfectly since I have a few neighbors that work at UPS/Fedex.
