i do, just not quite the amount of free time i need. and my problem is ive been holding off on painting the hood till i found a welder...i need more room under there. so now that im picking up the welder on thurs, the hood us going under the knife . other than that its all minor stuff, and i keep adding things to my plate. like the new parallel flow condensor....

 

I really like how the outside corners look rounded and the inside corners look squared off. When I get around to painting my orange or red stripes on mine i wanna do them like that.

I really like the layout, but that tape won't hold its shape for more than a couple days.....if that. I hope you plan on painting it sooner than later. You'll find that the inside corners will start peeling up.

 

Oops. I can't get the compressor back to the house for a week. If that happens, ill just have to redo those parts

 

wow, inner corners already lifted... I guess I know not to fix it until right before I paint.

the blue tape stuck, the green lifted. I think I need to go get a thinner roll of blue. like 1/8th instead of 1/4"

 

yea, the green 3m tape makes some nice sharp lines, but just doesnt hang on very long.

 

wish I had known that earlier. Maybe the stuff I put on without curves will hang on. I don't mind redoing the corners, now that I have my technique down.

 

Wow, only lasted an hour? I figured you had more time than that. 1/8" is more manageable for the corners.

 

well it was a few hours...

I used 1/16th green on the tight corners, but it was hard to handle. I'll change to 1/8th blue (couldn't find my roll, darn it, gotta buy more)

I'm also thinking of resanding my headlight buckets and do those again as long as I'm spraying satin. I wasn't happy with how they turned out the first time

 

re did it with the 1/8th blue. That stuff takes corners like a ferrari...

hopefully it will stick for a week. I know the picture looks crooked, but that's because the edge of the green tape under/behind the blue can't be seen that well. it's straight

as much as I'm still mad at myself for wasting the time and money on those vinyl stripes, some good did come of it. Before I laid down the vinyl I trimmed the heavy plastic backing paper that was stuck to one side of it to less than 1/16th of an inch to the edge of the stripe. when I pulled away the plastic, it left me with a really nice template that I could use for creating my own painted on stripes.

The front edge of the plastic didn't have the right angle to it, but a nice wide piece of tape stuck to the hood took care of that

I still have the plastic, and have told a friend he can use them whenever he wants to paint stripes.

I wonder if there's a market out there for heritage stripe templates?

 

If there isn't....there should be. Vinyl is for houses.

yep. I'll do that either tomorrow night or monday before I paint.

by the way, I've changed my mind from satin to gloss back stripes...

 

I know you don't wanna think about re-doing the whole thing, but there's a trick I'll tell you about. If you lay the rough tape work first, then do the detail on the edges of the stripes with the fine line on top, then as soon as you're done spraying you can peel off the fine line and it'll give the fresh paint edges a chance to lay down and you won't feel the tape edges as bad.

 

that's more or less what I did. I can remove the closest edge of the tape without disturbing the large areas of paper and plastic

thanks! It's not good enough to leave it as is...(of course, my garage is terrible for spraying) so i'm going to have to wait a few days, sand it smooth, and the buff it glossy again. The nice thing is when I'm done I should have mirror finish black stripes.

I'm pretty pleased.. there's one part where the tape must have come up funny on the stripes, it looks a little sloppy. not sure what I can do about that. maybe tape off the good part, sand the sloppy part with 1200 grit sandpaper, then buff everything. I'll have to experiment

no going to go with a built 4l60. my buddy can build them in his sleep. just need the parts. he is also going to help set everything in.
payment--my current engine and trans with all parts to put in a 50 something truck.

thanks, I'm glad I went to the trouble to do the heritage stripes, instead of just straight stripes like I used to have.

one thing that I think is interesting is how fast this prospray single stage dries. I've used single stage before, and it still felt sticky hours later. this stuff was dry to the touch after an hour.

If it wasn't for a little trash in the paint, I would be tempted not to sand and buff it at all, it came out really smooth

oh yeah, you can buff it just like clear. only with non metallic paint though...

well after all the excitement about getting the factory stereo with the mp3 input, last night when I turned it on it had horrible static coming out of the right rear channel, and it wasn't like satic caused by a weak signal. It was only out of the one speaker, and it wasn't controlled by the volume ****. the only way to shut it off was to put the old stereo back in. Guess it's a problem that didn't present itself until the stereo was on for a while.

and of course, I'm past the 7 day return period, so I'm out of luck. bummer

 

damn that sucks dude.

here's the stripes... fully sanded, compounded and polished.






just have left some general cleaning of nooks and crannies left, get some dust out of the interior, and one more upgrade that is secret for now.. that will happen monday... LOL
