contemplating.......
Hello
I currently drive a 01 Firebird. I am contemplating buying a used 90-92 Camaro. I say those years, but I would like an airbag. I know it WONT have antilock brakes or traction control. Any other safety concerns? I've never driven a car that old. Also, it seems like the ones I've found online are automatic, which is suprising......

In general terms of the design of the car, I'd say just that it was built to less stringent safety standards than exist today. A car is only as safe as the person driving it anyway. As long as you drive safely it shouldn't be an issue. I'd be more concerned about specific vehicle history, and how the car has been maintained. These cars are routinely hacked up, as a lot of us find after we buy one. Even if you have a good mechanical skill set bring someone else along who does when you look at the cars is my suggestion. Someone not involved tends to see things without the rose-colored glasses we tend to wear looking at something we want.

Well 1990-1992 will give you only the driver side air bag. Other than that, possibly larger brakes and dual front piston brakes on the 1LE (track type cars with no AC or fog lights and more than likely radio delete and no power windows or locks) or B4C (law enforcement models usually 1LE with all the power stuff).

A few years ago I would have called someone a puss if they wouldn't own a car with no airbags, but I get it now. As for traction control, I'd never owned a vehicle that had it until the last year or so.
Im ok with my 3rd gen not having air bags but I also don't plan on driving it every day.

Re: contemplating.......
The problem with airbags in these cars are their age. I wouldn't trust them given their age. On average an airbag system is supposed to be good for 15 years (per Delphi). These cars are well beyond that. I would disable it.

And they are the first gen air bags too that are more powerful that the later ones.
