New Bird owner

Hey all.. I just bought a 1985 trans am about a week ago and want to know all about it. Its got a 305 TPI with and automatic w/ overdrive and also T tops. Thats about all I know about it at this point. So I guess i just want to know what everyone does with this type of car? (power, looks, ect..) The transmission does have an issue, it shifts 1st and 2nd fine but it stays in 3rd for a second or less and shifts to the next gear? Thanks for any info. sorry, but i only get a limited time on the internet and cant spend a good amount of time searching the fourms.

Re: New Bird owner

welcome to the board. Well i am a camaro guy but still i would like to have a bird. Apperance wise there are hoods and custom spoilers that are VERY popular. Motor wise its all in preference. Glance through the boards when you can because you will learn SO MUCH from this site. Its the best site i have found for third gens. post some pics man i would love to see the T/A The best way is to host them through photobucket and then copy the IMG code and post it on here. Later -Matt

Birds are awesome, I just bought a Trans Am GTA.

The only thing I can say is don't listen to people telling you to swap out the 305, it's a good starter V8 in my opinon.

Re: New Bird owner

305tpi/700r4 transmission is a pretty good combo, thats what I have in my 87. depending how many miles your 700r4 could use a full rebuild. as for the looks just check out what I've done to mine, some people like it some don't but basically I swapped camaro gfx onto it (only one other person I know of to do this) and custom hood. some also like the 4th gen spoiler...

sorry Im not much help in the transmission section but it could be alot of things anything from just bad clutches to just being low on transmission fluid. what I'd do is drive the car to get it warm, put it in nuetral (be sure to chuck the wheels) then check the fluid and fluid color (should be bright red and see threw) if its black then I'd bring it to a shop and get the pan down to see if theres metal on the pan magnet and have them diagnosis the issue.
