I have a chance at picking up a mid 70's 350 with a quadrajet on it, complete minus starter. ran when pulled with low compression on a few cylinders. I figured it would be a nice basis for a rebuild. I'm just trying to figure out what would be a good price on it before I commit to it. The guy who has it lives about a half hour from here and is willing to deliver it.

ok, I DID wind up getting the engine today. I still have to tear it down and find out whats wrong with it and whats still usable if anything. according to the casting number on the block its a 68-76 2bolt 350. it has a quadrajet on it, the heads that are on it are 70-80 1.94/1.50 76cc combustion chambers. The engine came complete minus starter and flexplate. It has low compression on the three through six, and good compression on 1,2,7,8.... I hope the block isn't toast. It also came with a spare pair of complete heads that according to the numbers are 87-93 5.7

Do a basic rebuild on it and check your heads for cracks and warpping and you should be able to get it going no problem . If the heads are fine just lap the valves to make sure they seal good and you should be ok with them .

ok, the head gaskets were leaking between the middle cylinder on each side, so I have to have the deck of the block checked for flatness, as well as the heads. also had 4 burn intake valves in the head.
The engine was SUPER clean though, gaskets looked new, bearings were still silver, theres still cross hatch marks in the bottom of the cylinders, NO sludge, barely any carbon on the piston tops or combustion chambers. there was barely a ridge at the top of the cylinders, all the oil passages and water passages were super clean. I've actually never seen an engine this clean other than after they come back from the machine shop. I'm wondering if I should bother sending it in. Or if I should just make sure the deck is flat and run a hone through it, then get new rings, bearings and gaskets/seals.

Cool I would just have the heads checked and do a basic rebuild like you are talking about and have a fun engine .

If it looks that good just have your heads checked and thats all I would do .

whoo hoo.... I just had my engine checked out... the heads are pretty much door stops, they said for the money to fix them, I could get better heads. I need to have the crank polished. As far as the block... they said the only thing I should have done is the cam bearings :]
and they also pointed something else out.... the pistons steel plates around the wrist pins, AND they are .60 over :] This could get interesting.
