Detailing engine bay

Hey all.
I want to clean up my engine bay, white and black parts.

I do not want to pull the engine, its running too good right now.

I will pull battery, tanks, air filter housing and whatever else is not a major project.

I am good at tediuos maskings and patient with detailing.
Question is for those that have done this ... will this look half baked.
There really isnt much exposed.

Have any of you guys did this ? Advice ?

Thanks

Re: Detailing engine bay

I wish the egine in my TA looked as clean as yours right now. For only 50K mine is dirty and the under coating that is under my hood does not make it look any better. I do not see a need to pull the engine just to clean up the bay. Just pull what you can, get as many old rags as you can and alot of cans of parts cleaner. I do not hose an engine so I will only use parts cleaner, a mist bottle of water and rags or whatever else I need to scrub the gunk off.

Re: Detailing engine bay

I got the strut towers pretty clean with a scour pad and some degreaser, also need to get firewall clean, I was thinking using a degreaser and a pump sprayer to rinse so I am not overloading the water on the electronic things.

Just waiting for warmer air to paint the white/black parts.

I've did a little touching up and all I used was Dawn Dish Soap and very hot water, works great.I picked up a can of Dupli Color Perfect Match paint (40 WA8554) You may also have that color,I'll tell you after 25 yrs.the match was perfect and I got some under hood spray Black for the struts towers from came out pretty decent.

Re: Detailing engine bay

When I cleaned my engine bay I removed the coolant/wiper bottles. Then I got some autozone GM color match spray paint. I masked then painted the firewall and strut towers. Then I used silver engine paint for the the Plenum, valve covers, and ALT. I also painted the air filter housing gloss black.

I had pretty good results for just aroud $20 and a couple of hours.

Re: Detailing engine bay

I've used Simple Green and hot water with pretty good results. Just be careful of sharp edges when scrubbing and make sure you rinse it all down after cleaning.

Re: Detailing engine bay

Great - looks awesome buggyD, just what I'm after.

I'd like to do the alt and the air pump also, never thought to paint the valve covers. Did you pull them off to paint ?

Did you do the block anywhere, I can see areas of it in front, water pump etc ..

How about hot areas, around intake - got any closer pics ?

Simple green is great stuff, hot water, I will definately try that.

Thanks!

Nope, I just removed the valve cap, and hose, then masked everything off with newspaper. It wasn't difficult at all.

I didn't do the block, but used some engine degreaser and light sandpaper to get the crud off.

I did the plenum, and polished the runners. I don't have pics of the manifold, Here is the best I've got. It is holding up perfectly fine to the heat.

Your answers are in the quote!

Re: Detailing engine bay

Looks great Luis and Buggy.
Just need for the temperatures to cooperate, been cold here, too cold to paint.

I got new bottles also, and new insulation, not the good stuff, I like the premolded stuff.

What about the brake fluid res ? Can you get new plastic for that ? Mine looks a bit grungy.

Re: Detailing engine bay

Like everyone else has posted on here, a good strong degreaser, elbow grease, and patience will get it looking great. Luis (Motobrooks) has a gread thread (21 pages, but a lot of pictures showing every step he made) and he did a great job detailing his whole car. Even if you don't entirely remove something, just unbolt it and move it out of the way, will give you plenty of access to scrub and detail stuff. Take you time and work one section at a time, and your car will look fine.
