Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

More information to come when I confirm the function of this set-up. I was a bit disappointed in how the fuel level sensor went as I had an unknown replacement fuel module in the tank. Probably the cheapest POS the previous owner could afford. I'm so desperate and over budget to hear this thing run I put it together with the pump that came with the tank. New GM one with my GM discount is BIG dollars.

I got the level sensor kit for the 97 grand prix. Comes with two sensors and are the 0-90 OHM as stated in another thread. It was 145.00 CND. Took about a week to come up from the states.

Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

Well, the car is running. First time in 20 years.

Fuel tank swap worked out great! All the wiring and fuel feed/return seemed to functioning correctly. The only problem I have is that I basically can't fill the tank with fuel easily. AT this point I'm not sure if it is venting or if the roll over valve is sticking. The tank has been sitting in lots of weird positions plus it came out of a roll over wreck. I had to stick I hose down the fuel filler tube and felt like I was pushing back or opening what ever is in there and then the fuel would go down the neck. Problem is that this tubing might have also acted as a vent. I'll see about posting in a tech section.

Overall couldn't be happier, everything in the car worked. No over heating, and only one small coolant leak that will probably require a new clamp. Even managed to go for a short test drive around the dealer lot.

If you pulled off the charcoal canister like in the pic above - could be why - but I am not sure. I know that for my LS swap - I used the tank, but left that stuff on to vent and it works fine even though evap is not not functional, the canister still does its job

Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

I could go either way at this point. I'm going to drop the tank again and unplug the lines for the LS1 canister and see if that fixes it. I was trying to duplicate the third gen set-up as close as possible. I can restore the original LS1 set up, but wanted to have a functional evap set up for the 87. My other option could be to run a new vent line up to the top of the filler neck. Maybe there is a vent tube inside the filler neck on the old tin tank? Only thing I can think of.

Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

IMO, go back to the stock set up on the tank, it is light years better than the stuff the 87 came with from the factory. Maybe some other members on here can help you out with getting evap to work - but I think putting the canister back on will solve your fill issue

functional evap or not, you shouldn't have a fuel smell - I don't and evap is off for me

Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

Did you leave the line out from canister unplugged on the LS1 fuel tank? I was trying to avoid fuel smell like you said.

The LS1 evap purge wouldn't be all that difficult to get working but would require wiring to the rear and out somehow- as you know. Basically i want the car to able to go back to steel with just bolt in. Im sure you know what I'm talking about. I'm not concerned about the emission end but don't like raw fuel smell.

Atleast I don't mind pulling the tank now. Super easy with the plastic tank and flexible filler neck.

I'll see what happens- I took a shot..ohwell the joys of projects.

Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

This is my solution for the vent. Works okay.

Car runs like a top with this set-up and fuel level sensor is working as normal.

Hmmm..... seems like it'll work as you intend - I just hope that you dont have any trouble getting it into the hole in the car. As long as the canister is on the tank you should be golden

Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

I installed the tank with the filler neck assembled like that and zero issues. Filled the tank no problem with it backing up on me. That is the original fourth gen neck. I just drilled a hole and welded in the steel tube to connect the vent line. Original 87 EVAP is hooked up and functioning.

Re: 1987 GTA Barn Find

When I got my Camaro the tank wasn't venting at all so I pulled the rubber line off the charcoal canister and couldn't smell any fuel, then I pulled the rubber part off the hard line and found the problem, the steel line was rusted shut on the end. I cut a few inches off to get rid of the rusted part and could smell fuel right away so I knew I fixed it. I ended up putting a longer rubber hose on the steel line and sticking it down in the fender below the horn and removed my charcoal canister since it wasn't hooked to the carb anyway. I've never had any issue with smelling gas in the car since I did this.
