I was going to post that picture as well. If you notice, it also has long wheel studs in it. 2 holes, just like the firehawk race team rearends. ;-)

Have also wondered if the GM supplied "early" danas had 1 hole and the later SLP supplied danas had 2 holes due to a race team design update?
I have one early, and 1 late

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

time for update worked under dash found some poorly rigged wiring, this was spliced to the ignition switch plug and nothing was there to protect the solder joints - no tape or nuthin
so this 6" mess was cut and a 3" piece was installed there were other wires to another connector not sure what it goes to so they were taped up -still trying to figure out what it goes to but its in drivers kick panel area

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

The Dana 44 rear end needed some attention too it was a greasy mess I think it had been overfilled and pushed extra out the vent so how much fluid do these hold?
the axle studs were upgraded to 1/2"x3" by previous idiot they tried welding them in place and that didnt work to good, one was spinning when I tried to remove the lug nuts and others were not straight so I knocked them out (too easily) and sent them to Moser Engineering cost was $108 plus shipping and fast 2 day turnaround and they're like new

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

Next I cleaned up the caliper brackets in my parts washer with a small wire brush - I'm happy with how they turned out (one was cleaned in pic other was waiting to be)
then new bearings and seals were pressed on then I cleaned the housing up and rattle canned a new color on it then assembled it ready to be installed a little later

Anyone know how much clearance there is the the PHB? this cover is 3/8-1/2" taller than the rusty chrome one that was on it I may have to go back to a steel cover

That wiring you removed looks like a fire averted.

The axle cleaned up very nicely.

Ok here's the plug towards top of drivers kick panel and I dont see anything that it plugs into - anyone know what it goes to? its got 6 wires to it

on a side note the Dana axles are beefy! nice and Non tapered, here is a comparison to a 28 spline GM axle

Oh Ray! A classic and miss him. I've been a Blues Brothers fan since movie came out, I grew up in Chicago I've had the poster for a long time in my office then I moved to shop after I built it. In respect for Ray I mounted it that way

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

so was a little bored tonight and I have never seen this all together so I rounded the parts up and laid it out -Man this thing is big! I did test fit some Fram filters and I think they are 1/8"- to 1/4" too tall - anyone else think this? Kinda worries me that the stress may crack the lids I mean the plastic is almost 30 years old

Do you not have the K&N filters that came with it? I can get you the K&N part number tonight, I don't think they are stock size filters, but I could be wrong.

I have a set of regular Fram filters and a pair of their Airhog filters the AH are taller and dont think I can even Dzus them down, the regulars were better but still tighter than I would like
screw it I'll just use this one(it is NOS) and unclutter under the hood

thanks Scooter worth looking at

Yeah, they came with the normal Firebird K&N filters (E-0890). I wouldn't put it past the original plastic to shrink. Cracking is a real possibility. I wouldn't put anything under any stress if at all possible.

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

well just back from Vacation with wifey, we went to a small town near Buffalo NY where long time friend turned 60 this week so we went to his party and had a good time- Also went to Niagara falls and Rock and Roll hall of fame- Sunday it was 58 degrees rainy and windy so yes I was cold which is nice this time of year for me (was 105 heat index today now were home) anyway several months ago I found a front bumper on the auction site for cheap > $200 only problem was it was pick up only and it was in- yes Buffalo so my buddy picked it up and is storing it for me - finally got to inspect it and was off a 34K car that had a bad day
so I'm going to look into Fastenall shipping or he may drive down and bring it to me

I got the impact bar, absorber, upper support and attachment strips they were out by his garage also got to see one of my old cars that i sold him 25? years ago now it sports a gm crate 383 and Tremec 5 speed and we did go and lay some rubber down

I didn't notice any issues when driving, my buddy let them install 245/17s on this and I recommended him 275/40/17 - I believe they are 17x8" and 275 should be fine on a 8" wide wheel as far as Chevelle or Camaro back in the day the offset would be the same. on same note I have a set of 16x8 Ronal wheels that fit my third gen AND my first gen - its handy to have wheels that fit more than one of your vehicles

The fitment isn't exactly the same between the Chevelle and Camaro, especially when you get into wider wheels. A lot of people on NastyZ commented about the backspacing for the wheels before they produced them, they weren't ideal offset for the 2nd gen and that's the car that style came on, so them making them to fit the Chevelle was kind of strange. My R15's and GTA wheels will work on my 73 Camaro, but they rub the upper A arm. I am worried that these Y.O. 17" z wheels are also going to rub the upper arm, or rub the inner fenders at the wheel opening, they look like they are kind of close to the wheel opening in your picture.

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

70-74? Z28s used that 5 spoke style wheels - Chevelles also used same 15" wheels on 71-72? IMO they are Z wheels and that may be why they wouldn't do wider 275's I used to run 16x8 REAR -Iroc wheels on that same 70 above they sat out further and I still added 1/8-1/4" spacer to them it was before the pro-touring craze became cool. It has fast ratio steering box and the WS-6 sway bars too
I ordered the Repro F/H 17" wheels and they're on eternal B/O and found a member that has an OE set but they are double the $$ hoping they will fit OK but I would be willing to get the OE if I could get him to send pics

Edit: yes Chevelles 71-72 list the 15x7 5 spoke Z/28 wheels as SS wheels too

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

OK so I'm a little bored at work and not much going on with this car at the moment i've been concentrating on getting my 69 Bird to pont of running so then i can get it to bodyman to get it finished up and here's a few pics of it - 69 Trans Am clone

started as a 350 car without someone loving it so first bodyman flared quarters and minitubed it

then I broke car in half - again! decided to upgrade front subframe to a DSE with bigger C/5 front brakes

and got it installed - had to redesign the exhaust system - went from stainless works headers to 2014-2015 Z28 manifolds to clear steering shaft the DSE headers are $2300 plus to fit their subframe - aint doin dat!

I've been waiting for long time friend to rebuild and paint a steering column for me, in Jan 2018 I told him I would be needing it soon so couple months ago I gave up and bought another one

tore it ALL the way apart (Gulp-never gone all the way before - be gentle please) painted it

and there its in the car actually got it hooked for to R&P and wheels will now turn yay! I'm trying to finish up wiring the car with an AAW update harness - and well I'll just say it im not much at electrical but with buddies help were getting close and I'm working on engine stuff - prelubing engine, hooking up P/S and such

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

You spent $12k on a front subframe and then scoff at $2300 for headers?

I am considering that DSE subframe for my second gen

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

Scooter - No I didn't spend that- barely half that and my justification was I sold the other sub-frame and parts for over 3 so I didn't spend that all at once - you gotta admit 2300 is steep for long tubes I tried the ebay $200 headers

actually the #1 tube looks like was made for this sub-frame and they almost fit but did they hung way to low!
so this is what the Z28 and now the ZL1's use

these should work just fine for the weenie motor

Good looking manifolds. Interesting that one bank mixes every other cylinder, while the other pairs adjacent cylinders.

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

Sadly no progress whatsoever on the '90 other than I found and had this front impact bar shipped to me

So as you can see the early bumper is close - a little taller in height and the ends are curled back more I will have to open up for the turn signal housings saving all of 9 lbs of dead weight but it has to come apart anyway I might as well drop some weight up front and battery will be in back too
now back on the 1969

more parts added to stockpile for this project out of a 95 Firehawk with 140k that was hit in rear quarter and confirmed it had no issues shifting it. If anyone knows what brand mount and torque arm is please advise I was told was Spohn?
seller said he had mount I needed and got all with hardware for a addl $150
all in I spent $1050 which I thought was good deal and within 10 miles of home

You can also use a 89 tta crossmember for 6speed conversions. Plus it takes tq arm off the trans like aftermarket stuff

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

been a while- little update- I finally (exactly a year after I bought front bumper) got it brought down from my buddy near Buffalo Now i have all the parts needed for nose and tail update to 91-92 style and I have gotten a list of parts I'll take to painter probably after the first of the year. Meanwhile I've been plugging away at my 69 Trans Am clone and good news I have gotten it started!!! (this is a first! it has never ran since I have owned it), a working clutch and brakes bled (what a PITA ) but got a good pedal only snafu is the adj prop valve is leaking at the adapter fittings that are 1/8" pipe fittings so I will try to get that sealed up and re-bled and then should be at least movable (read Off my lift!) so I can get a third gen on it. Already received my racetronix pump and harness assy I may need tank and sender but will wait till I drop it down to have a look see in the tank, car hasn't run since 2004? so I dont have high expectations for a clean tank. I tried to look into tank with cheap borescope but I couldn't get it to see much

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

well I got help from my son and we shuffled some cars around so I can start on the 90 again Gonna start on the rear and go forward. Finally have this up in air and can inspect it and I have to say it looks like PO was a 4x4 fan and thought this car was capable- I knew the Accel Tri-Ys were damaged but I see damage on the front crossmember, some of drvrs subframe to rocker brace, the hood latch support and even the PHB mount. Man I need to think about this car as I have my 87 Trans Am and body (not paint) and interior are in better shape - it was never off roaded but I was liking the 91-92 style front end and no aero. I only want one thirdgen

Jacking misadventures and running over boulders or? the PHB damage is on back side only ? IDK how 1/2 was torn away like that and only half a$$ repaired, I think that should be easy to repair with a doner part spliced in and I knew the fenders were folded over when I bought it, didnt think they were so bad either way car was a deal. I'm not sure what you call the brace or support from rocker to subframe but if anyone has experience or a suggestion on how to repair or replace that, I'm all ears

If you mean the reinforcement in the 4th pic, it's pretty stout, just not stout enough to be a lifting point. My project is banged up a bit in the same spot. If I were really serious about fixing it, I'd probably cut all the spot welds, take it over to the bench and pound it back into shape, then weld it back on. But, I'm leaning towards ****-it. If it's not rusty, if it's not causing a problem, then it doesn't need to be fixed.

brace? support? reinforcement? - whatever can we just call it a Tally-whacker? I really didn't know what to call it and after looking at it again it was pushed in from weight of the car on a stand I need something like a large pull rod used for sheet metal - something "L" or "C" shaped to pull down or beat down on the crater that stand left I don't think cutting it out would be feasible with the SFC mounted on edge but Ill look at it

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

Yeah, I've tried welding studs to metal that heavy and pulling, ended up just ripping the metal. Pretty sure I tried the open end of a C-clamp and didn't budge it. At that point I was thinking either cut it to get the compound stresses relieved, then form it straight and weld it back up, or cut it off the car and work it out with hammer/dolly/anvil then weld it back on.

My project car definitely did a lot of off roading. The frame rails were all full of dirt and mud, lots of plant debris, grass and weeds packed in around any protrusion under the car and in every opening. I've got a nice gouge in the passenger's rocker to work out, and that brace, everything else I've mostly worked out. The thicker steel is difficult to pull and I can't get at it from the backside...

Drew yeah its sad some boneheads cant keep thing on pavement or know how to properly lift things - whats your thoughts on lower fender attachment repair or lip or pinch weld or Tally Whacker- slowly straighten with crescent wrench and or hammer till its back vertical this one went past 90' you dont by chance have any pics of what its supposed to look like?
I bet Mrs. Ballbricker could pull that dent out with her death grip on it

Re: 90 Formula from derelict to street XXXXXXX Beater

I don't really have photos of how they should be, on account of how my thirdgens without ground effects have all had the pinch welds flattened. Any photos of my repaired flanges would be my "artist's rendition" of how they should be, more than an accurate example of undamaged flanges. My go-to solution is to bend them vertical to match the pinch weld under the rockers/floor, and smooth out the damage as best as possible. If the position isn't 100% accurate, it doesn't matter too much since the tabs on the fenders and the clip/bolt-on secondary fender mounting tabs have a fair bit of adjustment and spacing capabilities. As in, you can bend the tabs or the pinch welds as necessary, or add shims, make adjustments to fit the fenders even if everything isn't exactly OCD perfect.
