Newb question!!!!

I currently do not own a 3rd gen F-Body, but I did own an 87 GTA in High School roughly 25 years ago. I have been looking online at some and they seem to be kinda scarce. But as for my question. I always wondered why Pontiac and Chevy had different air intakes for the TPI engines... Pontiac with the single canister and Chevy with the dual boxes. I always assumed it was just to set them apart from one another, or was there another reason behind the different design?
