Window tint and NYS

I need to know from someone here who has decent window tint what the stae limit is for how dark the windows are allowed to be tinted. My car is originally from Alabama and came to me with tint on it, but it was so old that it was mostly transparent and didn't do beans in terms of blocking the sun's heat and light from the interior, so old that it was purple and had to be removed becuase it was purple and had holes everywhere. I want to re-tint it because the tint helps keep the sun away, but I don't know the state limits on how dark I can tint the windows and I don't know of anywhere in the Rochester area I can find out, and, being 18, I REALLY don't want to get a ticket for having the windows too dark!

I would think that any shop that does tinting could tell you what the legal limit is.

Tint ticket is probably only $75 or so, no points though. But the cop can have PMS and decided to walk around your car and ticket you for dirty headlights or whatever he feels like.

Take it to a tint shop since this is obviously where you will be having it tinted. I know your not using that cheap autozone stuff that looks horrible right?

I've heard that most shops won't do the hatch due to it's size and shape, and I'd much rather do it myself for two reasons: 1. It's a heck of a lot cheaper. 2. I like doing it myself because I really don't trust anyone to work on my car but me because I know its ins and outs.
I don't care if I end up redoing the tint every year or two, but I don't want to get pulled over by some of those tightwad cops who pull me over just to fill their monthly quotas and have bragging rights over the other cops in the area (watch out, those of you living in Saratoga Springs!)! And any ticket will raise my insurance rate to a lot higher than I can pay.

They don't have quotas, they are illigle. Cops generally have 30 tickets and 2 arrests a month. If they are alot lower than that then they may be questioned about what they are doing.

the legal limit in nys is 70% tint on the front 2 door glass windows if your cars a 4 door you can have it painted black if you want. the rear window can be as dark as you want it to. you can only go 6 inches down on your windshield with tint. i know because im from ny and been pulled over for tint being to dark before and asked the trooper what the law was and what i said earlier is exactly what he told me.

So that explains the single wide strip of tint on the windshield, but I'm not quite clear on what you said about the side windows for 2 doors. You said 70% for the fronts on four doors and as dark as you want for the rear window, but what about for our cars? Is that what "painted black if you want" means?

35% is the darkest you can go on the door glass not 70%. And yes you can go as dark as you like on the backglass.....

Its 70 or 35 on the front 2 door, anything behind the drivers and passanger doors can be whatever you want. Painting it black would be illigle though, since it impeeds your view. I think you have have whatever you want for the 6in on the front windshield to. There should be a little black line on the side to indicate how far it can be tinted.

Actually, the windshield tint is the only tint in decent shape. So I figure that I get like 10-15% for the rear, and 45% for the front? Does that sound reasonable? I have no clue as to what the factory tints are on the windows... I've heard that the fronts are factory at like 2.5% or so from being totally clear due to the UV coat and something slightly more for the back.

Well you have conflicting opinions about the legal limits. I would look that up, or next time you see a cop in a deli or somthing just ask. Personally I don't like how a light tint on the front windows and a real dark one on the back looks. If thats what you like though, sounds fine, just make sure its legal.

Well, I'm not going to go all the way to limo dark (5%) for the rear and I was thinking about going down to about 40% on the rest of the windows, minus the t-tops, which WILL be limo dark.

I'm just looking to cut the sunlight entering the interior as much as possible for when I switch to black, because it's going to be hot as heck in there even in the winter if I stay the way it is now. I don't really mind the color difference because to the rest of the world, it's going to be black inside anyways.
