Emissions exempt in MA?

I was told that if you have receipts totalling $600 or more trying to fix an emissions problem, you can apply for exeption. Is there truth to this?

Think an engine swap counts?

Im a state inspector in this miserable state (MA) Yes this is true. If you spend over 600 dollars if your car got rejected on emission then theyll pass. But you have to prove it to the registry (meaning going to a repair shop recommended by the registry) They only give you one yr for this tho, but next yr.. you either have to fix it. Or junk it

I just found out that for cars over 10 years old it is only $200! But it has to be in repairs by a registered repair shop (with the state). Hmm...
