I'm looking to get my 700R4 fixed for less than 1200 bucks. The big names dont seem to be very reputable for good work, so I'm looking for any other places anyone else might recommend to do the work. I'd prefer to just have it done on the side, so i can pay the mechanic less than i'd pay in the shop, but the mechanic would be getting all the money. I'm still kind of debating if i should get an already rebuilt trans and just have some place install it or what. I really just dont have the place to drop it myself and get things that far being at an apartment.

So, does anyone know of such a place? I'm pretty sure the trans just burned out the clutchpack for the 2nd to third gear shift. So it'll need your basic rebuild kit, plus a good flushing of both the trans and tc to remove any debris and old fluid. Everyplace i've called so far has either refused to give me a quote on a job based on if it was that problem, or told me it's gonna be too much.

All i have is 1200 bucks, and i would have liked to have some left over to get a trans cooler or do some other work on the car at the same time, but if i have to i'll just deal with getting only the trans fixed for that much. If need be, i'll go with swapping it for a rebuilt one if that would be cheaper.

So please, anyone who's dealt with a place for trans work or knows a good shop that isn't going to rape me or is able to do the work themselves for less than 1200, respond and tell me what's up. The car's been down for over a month and i'd like to get back to driving it asap. I'm located in mount holly, so i'm not far away from NE philly , trenton, levittown, burlington etc. I'll have to get the car towed because i dont want to drive around in 2nd gear all over the place while who knows what is floating around in the fluid.

I'm always in that area. I can get a mild build (up to 350hp) and TC for about 900 bucks. Then I'll just have to find some way to install it myself, since no shop is going to remove/install a trans for 300 bucks.

any comments ?

Without knowing what is wrong with the trans there is no way to guarantee a price bracket. If the planetaries went it could have sent metal throughout the unit causing havoc where everything even the convertor must be replaced. A good rebuild with the usual street/strip upgrades and rebuilt convertor runs around $1200 installed at my shop so you are in the right area if all it needs is a soft part rebuild.

Re: Any trans shops in NJ/PA area ?
a well known shop stock totally rebuilt a 1997 chevy truck ext cab 4L60E for us for 1000 exactly and i thought that was high,

but the shop said it was really super worn out

the owner now has 200k(196k) on the truck and it still looks and drives like a brand new truck, and he has already put at least 60k miles on the rebuild already in just a couple years, he is freaking crazy
so i dunno

th350 and such trannies only cost a third that much to have rebuilt

and thats high to me still

its crazy

and front wheel drive trannies we just put in a lower miles junkyard one

and same with the dodge trucks

we picked up a dodge 4 speed auto from a 90 something van with only 19k on it for 600 bucks,

i figured that was decent,
good luck

HRm... It's either you or I buy a rebuilt trans at that site i linked above and converter and end up finding some way to install it outside of a shop (myself and anyone else i can find).

I'm really pretty sure i just lost the clutchpack. The engine overheated a couple times because my fan switch is dead and I have to turn it on manually (and forgot) and stupid me, didn't change the fluid. Add a slow leak, so low fluid levels, and fast forward a few months and I lost the ability to shift into third. I drove 10 miles in 2nd and was able to move from 1st to 2nd and reverse without a problem (it was like the trans was perfectly fine). So i dont think that would indicate a global failure anywhere. I am worried about pieces of the clutch plates getting into the TC. I haven't dropped the pan to look at the fluid (if there's any left. I have to re-tap a screw hole on the pan, for some reason it got stripped out.

Where are you located and what is your number (pm me if you want). I am working until 4:30 this week and i'm off the 4th and 5th. I want to get in contact with you asap. The car is techncially drivable in 1st and 2nd though I haven't driven it since the very first day this happened. Not sure how much a tow truck would be from Mount Holly/Eastampton.

If I have a choice between buying this other trans or going to your shop, I'd prefer the shop because you've done this before and I haven't. I'm just on a tight budget of ~1200 bucks.

Re: Any trans shops in NJ/PA area ?
So far so good. second day on the road. It chirps first everytime unless i'm basically coasting through it Hopefully that's not harmful. It kicks pretty hard coming out of park into drive too. I dont have a problem with that if the trans dont. Otherwise it feels pretty good for a nearly (fully) stock 305.

I think i need to check the idle and timing and iac. My rpms may be too high in park, but when i am in drive/reverse they used to be too low and i'd stall out (which is why i turned up the idle speed originally). I'll have to look into that.
