New Ride - 91 TA T-Tops
Hey guys, I bought that bird on craigslist this weekend as sort of a birthday present to myself. Not sure what route I'm going with it, but here are my options:
Fix it up, drop in my new engine and make it my primary car
Fix it so it runs, use it as a 'runner' while I'm pimpin out my 92 GTA, then sell it
Part it out
Here is the original link
So ya, I paid $400 bucks and the guy towed it to my house. Not bad

The rap --- engine does have some sort of knock. Told it could be rod knock or something loose. Car did not come with a key to lock it. Drivers side door handle is gone, and looks like somebody took a screwdriver to it. Front drivers side tire is a spare, so it's missing the actual wheel. All other wheels have a wheel lock that I do not have the key for.
So, I'll have some pics tonight. Gotta make it to the DMV soon and try to register it. It was a lien sale, guy who had it couldn't pay the tow company to get it out. Hopefully I wont have any problems with the paperwork...

Took it for a lil drive around the block yesterday. Can't really get above 35mph... don't want it to freeze up on me. Tranny seems to shift decently tho. Still haven't gotten pics, I wanna wash it all up and see how much better it looks clean! Haha, so I'll hopefully get to that today.
So ya, I'm also missing a rear view mirror & cabin light. Hood and hatch struts are blown. Radio and speakers work
All gauges work.
Wonder how much work it'll take to get this bad boy rockin'! Hey, any of you guys ever replace door handles before? The driver's side one is gone, and looks like somebody took a screwdriver to it. Gotta get a new one, plus a key
But this car definately has some potential!

rod knock....
Just a quick thought, and it depends on how bad the engine knock is; but I have several times in the past with other cars, pulled the oil pan and changed out the old bearing for new. I've even had to do a couple hours worth of emery cloth sanding on a couple rod journals, but usually, it's an emergency patch that's lasted thousands of extra miles. don't know how accessable your rod's are but it's a way to postpone a time consuming repair.
Again, just a thought....

EatFordSh1t, we're in the same boat. I wanna take it apart and see if I can fix whatever knock there is (for as cheap as possible). Same plans for you?

names ron, yours?
im thinking about that route. but im wondering whats more realistic and economic. rebuilding piece by piece? or just gettin a new/rebuilt motor. if i do get a new motor, id sell my old firebird. not decided yet. im gonna meet up with vin to see what direction were gonna go in.

name is nick
nice to meet you ron
I have a 92 GTA that i just bought zz4 internals for. also got the complete aftermarket tpi for it (52mm tb, tpis big mouth base, as&m ltr, self-ported plenum) and msd ignition.
The plan was to throw that all in the 92 GTA but....
maybe I'll throw it in the 91 t/a
or maybe ill just try to fix up the 91 ta and sell it for a profit. if that proves too difficult, I may just part it out. I have 0 experience in rebuilding motors, but I'm goin to learn

The car is running like crap. It died right before I got it on the dyno for smog. I'm going to be taking it apart today and seeing what i can find out. For now, check this out! I did a ohm check on all the injectors and this is what I got:
BACK
2.6 O O 7.7
16.8 O O 16.8
10.0 O O 8.2
8.5 O O 13.5
FRONT
That's funny... guess I'll be replacing the injectors. What are the stock injector size for a 91 TA? what about a 92 GTA?

ran a whole can of seafoam through it and i thought the neighbors were going to call the cops
I took a lil video of it too, ill show anybody who's interested tomorrow.
started disassembling the intake... but didn't get too far because I figured on taking out the cruise control module and put it in my GTA. that took most of the day because I had to splice a bunch of wires and a couple vacuum hoses. Kinda ghetto, but hopefully it'll work for tomorrows long drive to Sac town. Now, if only I knew how to work the cruise control on the steering wheel.....
see ya guys tomorrow
