I have been buiding a 355 for the Formula which I htink would be awesome, but the last few days I have been pondering an LS1 swap. I'm doing the T56 anyway but I think the ls1+T56+3.73's would be a sweet setup. Right now I'm 50/50 but falling more towards the Ls1 the more I think about it. Give me your input please.

LS1 would be nice, and you should take advantage of the fact that you have no smog. That way you could put in some stroked or stock NA LS1 that looks clean and even have a AC without a problem with less work than someone in CA.

But can you afford it, and have time for it? I say that because I would rather see your car done in some given time period then end up like Terrell.

I'm still planning on the LS1/4L60e swap for my old Firebird sometime this century.
If you decide to go that direction, I'd definitely like to see the parts you decide to go with, the wiring, etc. and of course would lend a hand which would benefit me later on my project.

However, 355 is a nice number too and could be accomplished much cheaper and faster as Cam pointed out.

I'm adding up pros and cons and pricing of both right now. I think the 355 will be a street pounder while the LS1 would be a great dd, with plenty of hp and mpgs too boot. Not that it would be my dd but if I wanted to take it to the coast or socal for meets or whatever.

Joey (Ramair21) is who you should be talking to about this. AFAIK, his car is kept for special occassions like weekends. I guess that's what you do when you have a company car.

His car was doing 12's with minimal tuning in Bakersfield. Nice driver with and auto.

Yeah I'm gunna pm him and get more info. It would be a lot easier to tune the LS1 than the l98.

either would be badass. it would be more work to get the LS1 in. I'd say continue with the sbc just because your already into it.

after driving the formula I kinda wish I would have built a nice sbc.

Are you still contemplating the turbo ls1 buildup or is it for sure a go. I dont remember what exactly was said in the thread, but I remember one a couple months ago were you were talking about not going through the current project and selling you iroc.

LS1's are nice, in fact they're coming down in price quite a bit to the point where it might make more sense financially to start with one over an SBC considering the power potential and the fact that the heads flow better than a lot of aftermarket SBC heads.

Assuming no power adder and no exotic Gen 3 parts, the LS1 would have similar power potential and would possibly cost less if you find a lot of good deals. It seems like you can find cheap used LS1 parts left and right. There is no reason that a SBC can't get decent gas mileage (maybe a little less than an LS1... my car when it was a TPI 350/T-56/4.10's got low 20's on the highway) or be driven to the coast, so I don't know if that should really come into the equation.

You can even put an LS1 computer onto a SBC if you are so inclined. The advantages the LS1 really has over the L98 electronically is better fuel control due to having sequential fire and a MAF sensor, and you get individual coil packs per cylinder for better spark control.

I have some Gen 3/4 stuff lying around, just need to find a suitable project. I won't be putting an LS1 in my 3rdgen anytime soon just because I already have so much time and money invested in what is already in it.

I think the LS1 wouldn't be a bad choice if you already didn't have $$$ in your shortblock.

Stick with the L98 IMO

I could always resell the shortblock so I'm not really worried about that. I'm in a little over $2,200 and I know I won't get it all back so it is something to consider.

I have access to a complete F-body LS1 with 30k miles minus harness/pcm/coil packs/flywheel... cheap. PM me if you decide to go that route.

I wouldn't be starting this till Feb. so if you still have the hookup then, I'll be getting ahold of you.

I have been adding everything up and it's going to cost around $4,500 -$5,000 to finish just the 355, that's heads/cam/intake/water and oil pumps/headers/tuning/ odds and ends. I can sell the shortblock and transmission and buy all the swap parts now, I can use these for $85 instead of the $500 K-member which will save right there.



I think I can do the LS1 swap for less than it would cost to finish the 355 and I won't have the hassle of trying to tune it either. Boys, I think I made up my mind.

definitely you can build up an ls1 for cheaper than a 355

My wife like this point too as she asked what the benefits of an LS1 would be and I told her the pros and cons of both. She still is no help though, she said "do whatever you want to".

I don't really want to Build it up though, I'll proably just do a cam.

Get some Lts, LS6 intake, 230/230 + cam, and tune should put down 400+rwhp. Tons of those combos out there.

Recently with the release of the LSX block for 1900$, the L92 heads/L76 intake and decent cam setups are making GREAT numbers in the 500rw range.

If I was rebuilding right now, I'd would get the LSx block and do the L92/L76 setup in a heartbeat. Its basically an LS7 but cheaper lol.

I AM going with the lsx. I already have the long tubes picked out, still need to research the cam though, nothing radical. I know Jeremy has an l92.

I'll be ok with 12's-13's.

shouldn't need a cam for 12's. stock ls1 with a good tune would go 12's in a thirdgen.

Cool, I am doing the 00-02 with ls6 intake and I'm puting in an ls6 clutch also. When my 355 sells I'm ordering the engine mounts, trans crossmember, torque arm, and finishing up my Z06 brakes. I'm also going to sell my Prokit and put in the Sportlines. I might even go a different route on the rims.

i have my ls6 clutch i could sell to u fairly cheap. has plenty of life left in it. ls1 are known for throwing rods, from weak rod bolt, i suggest on replacing them for katech or arp rod bolts. if u do consider of having ur block built heres a site that does great engine builds. http://www.mizfitmotorsports.com/packages.html

DO THE LS1 SWAP!! I love it. I wish is ran 12's it ran 13.5. When i put my cold air intake on i should be in the 12's. Plus it was really hot that day in bakersfield.

The ls1 is great for a dd. I took it to lake tahoe and to Reno and it gave me about 22mpg. Thats going up hill full blast. And plus you can do a little to the motor to get well in the 12's. I wanted to get a old LT1 motor but it would not be as good as a LS1. I have alot of info to give you if you want it. I could even head over there to give you a hand. Just PM me for anything.

I already have my 355 on Craigslist so as soo as it sells I'm picking up all the mounting stuff and finishing my brakes and suspension. I'll pick up the motor/trans/ecu/harness/maybe a little bigger cam and have it dyno tuned. I can't wait now. I wanted to do something custom so here I go. I pretty sure I'm gunna sell my wheels and buy some newones, maybe Ronals

I noticed Kandied is selling his air ride setup so I might go that route, not sure yet.

Make sure you get a 99 and up LS1. The 98s are hard to work with. I think i spent around 12grand for the swap. maybe more. Your going to love it bro! If your going to go air go for it! Also spend the extra $500 on the Electronic leveler. i wish i had. Im always going in and out of the car to make the car stance the way i want it. I wouldn't recommend you do the air suspension your self. Take it in to a shop cause you got to cut and do all kinds of stuff. TRUST ME!! Cant wait to hear from you to talk about this. Im getting excited for you on this swap!

How the hell did you spend 12g's on the swap? Did you buy all new parts?

I'd stick with the 00-02 like you mentioned earlier Steve, for what Joey mentioned and of course the LS6 intake.
That was definitely a factor in selecting my '01.

Steve, Make sure you get the 01-02 year. Those didn't come with the EGR. But since you live in Reno (No smog) you can get the 00 and delete the EGR. The 00 has a little bigger cam than the 01-02. But are you going to change the cam out of the LS1 soon?

Good to know about the egr, I would rather buy it already deleted than do it myself. The cam I was just gunna do before I put the engine in, that way I could just put it in and dyno it. How much more does the tank hold? I'm not to worried abot the extra fuel if it's like a gallon or less.

Just the swap parts. The LS1 had 40,000 miles on it. Your going to need to get a tuner for your swap. i got the HPtuners. If i didnt have it then the swap would be so HARD!! You should get that too. kragen wont be able to help you at all bro. Plus you can modify almost anything on your LS1 computer. Let me send you the notes.
