Re: me? smog? help?

So did the code 42 go away? if timing is off that can be part of the problem. Also seems you can test the EGR solenoid, The lowdown on code 32(egr).

Re: me? smog? help?

Post a copy of the failed smog reports & shoot me your CC# & we'll tell ya exactly what the prob is. Probably fix it in the process. Remember, friends are friends, but friends that own smog machines are PRICELESS!

Wow! I don't have ASE and definitely not a Master Tech. Still working on it. Maybe 10 more years. I'm a slow learner. I only have the equivalent and I am just a backyard mechanic so can't really help you there. Maybe you should do what Porky said. Read the EGR lowdown. That should help you diagnos it. That's what I would have said. I read it too and I just . Seriously, read the EGR lowdown. 99% of the repair is already there. Hmm, I'll keep that last 1% in my sleeves.

Re: me? smog? help?

Oh darn it. I forgot about that one but since you mentioned it, that's the half of the % I was keeping in my sleeves. So, now I guess I only have .5%

Re: me? smog? help?

lol I forgot I have the GM service manual for this car, and there is a nice section dedicated to each SES code. I brought home a vacuum gauge and pump and I will be trouble shooting that egr system tomorrow.
After I read that guide, it pretty much summed up everything I could know and try, now onto the egr vacuum solenoid.. ill let you guys know tomorrow.

Re: me? smog? help?

i heard one about like that, you put a tissue paper next to the tailpipe, and if it sucks it in, you have a bad valve.
disclaimer, i have no tests that validate this , they all seem to suck paper up the tailpipe as it pulses..

I just went out and replaced my egr, as i was guessing it was bad. yep it was.
travisz, your egr should not let the vacuum leak right bak down. mine did on a vacuum pump i got. like a brake bleeder type.
and it didnt move up and down, just leaked down. (bad diaprham inside).
then i took it out, pushed it in, and put my finger over the pinhole in the vacuum port on the egr, it went down fast after being pressed in by hand, no difference if hole plugged or not.
new egr, push up diaphram, and put finger over hole, it holds it in place...
now will see if it passes smog. figure it will. and no more code 32s
