Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
ITs a 91 Z/28 350/auto tranny. Its red with the grey cloth interior. Its has a non original engine and tranny in from another 91 Z/28 according to the owner. The engine is just sitting in the engine bay and needs to be all hooked back up. No wires have been cut. ITs going to need some work but for $1150 its worth it. I am going to pull the engine and tranny back out and paint everything and make it look nice. My plans include for now is to do a 5 speed manual tranny conversion as I hate automatics. The paint is ok but the clear coat is peeling. I will probably leave that alone until more finances come in.
I will be picking it up tomorrow in Oregon and am very excited.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
If you're going to swap to a stick do it right and go T56, but if you're stock and under a budget (I was) T5 will do just fine, I blew up two of them!

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
I would love to do a T56 swap, but I am on a tight budget so I will plan to do the T5. I will keep the auto for the time being. I just want to get the thing running first

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
I forgot to mention that it also has the 4 wheel disc brakes. I also misunderstood the owner that the engine is not from another '91 Z/28, but from an '89 Corvette so I'll need to look up the horsepower rating for 1989.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
That is called the "diverter valves". It diverts air to the manifold at cold starts then diverts the air(from air pump)to the catalytic converter when engine is warm.

mcsslover1987, super nice car man. congrats!
You have a really nice clean interior and the body looks good too for those miles. And really those miles are not bad. Can't wait to see the project come along, let us know how she runs when it's all hooked up. Oh, clean engine bay too.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Iron heads mean it's definitely not from an 89 Vette... Which had aluminum heads that year (and forever afterwards). I hate finding out the previous owner has lied to me about something trivial... lol.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Well the paint might be ok, but the clear coat is peeling on top, the hood, the decklid, and the top of the doors where the sun beat on it. I am wondering if I can just sand the clear coat but not the paint and just put a couple coats of clear on it?

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Well the engine I think is from an 88, at least I'm pretty sure as it has the serpentine set up (unless it was from my 91 and they put it on). The guy I bought the car from was told it was from an 89. He just bought the car to make a few bucks and not really to restore it.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Most likely its not a Vette motor. Maybe a short block out of a vette, but vettes got aluminum heads starting in 86 and only on the verts in 87 they all got aluminum heads. No big deal though the vette was still rated at 245hp, Just enjoy your new car

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Well i worked on my car today. Got the intake/tpi system all pulled off along with all the stuff in front of the engine so its about ready to be pulled. Just have to unbolt the tranny and the motor mounts. Also made an overhead wood frame to put my come-a-long on so I can puill my engine. I will try to get pics up tomorrow.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Awesome car! I wish I got a deal like that, I paid $1,700 for mine, in MUCH worse shape, and it's a 305
But other than that, looks like our cars were twins from the factory, both had grey sport buckets, red hardtops, hatch shade, etc. Great looking car, mine will take thousands to get to where yours is!

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Mine, the clear coat is peeling off in places and the front air dam is scraped up some and has a crack. The interior smells musty. Someday it will get new seat covers, carpet and a headliner. I am getting more anxious to get the engine rebuilt and the parts I need to get it running. Just need $$.

Wills91RS, I've gotten some good info from several people here in my private messages and I'm sure I will be doing alot more searching and asking more questions once I start putting the engine back into my car
Its going to get more fun for me as time goes on. I just wish I had some tpi knowledgeable people that lived close to Yreka. Joined: Feb 2006

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
I went to the machine shop here in Yreka and the guy told me it'll be between $1500 and $2200 to rebuild my engine, depending on what needs to be done so I'm a little discouraged and not sure what I'm going to do next.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
The EPA stepped in and had several charges against shops and the state charges depreciation fees on their equipment every year and its getting bad here in CA for small business to survive. $950 isnt a bad price but that was then and this is now.

I know you dont have to tell me I work at a shop. Just a mechanic repair shop not an engine rebuilding shop. I also got a **** poor valve job that I am regretting now. I know that is the going rate 86firebirdta is getting his long block done now and it is falling into those #'s too. Sorry if I came across in a different way.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Do u have any of the rebuild parts (pistons, rods, bearings), yet or are you just looking for someone to do the whole thing from start to finish. A GM shortblock brand new is only 1200 and u get the warranty from the factory.

Copchaser, I was thinking of having the whole thing rebuilt, but that GM shortblock thing is looking good to me LOL In the mean time I'm just going to be buying parts for my car thar are needed to get it running so after I get my engine done I'll have the parts to put on it.

Re: Finally getting a third gen Camaro!!
Sush that's supose to be a secret! I don't mind helping the norcal guys but I don't want people all over the US calling and asking wierd question all the time we get enough of that thanks to a waste of time web site our sales dept set up for us.
Norcal guys can email me at parts@folsomchevy.com put att:Ryan in the subject field.
They don't sell a long block for the TPI engines any longer it would be a standard engine.
